Nemesis caught up with a couple who specialised in stealing children between the ages of three and one and sold them to a woman, who in turn sold to childless couples making profit. Chibueze Mba, 27, from Mbaitoli, Imo State, said he is a furniture maker in Akwa Ibom State.

According to him, when he packed to Awo Idemili, Imo State, last year and started sand excavation job at Ebenesi tipper garage, these children were coming to him and one day, his wife, who was pregnant, bathed the children and said she was taking them to party and that was the last the parents saw of their children since last September.

The two children, Goodluck Amaechi, male and Promise Amaechi, female, who are cousins from Awo Idemili were sold to a textile dealer, Mrs. Benedict Ogburuonwu, 40, at Okwe in Asaba, Delta State for N400,000, that is, N200,000 each last September. Mrs. Ogburuonwu said she in turn sold them at higher prices to childless couple at a profit. However, she didn’t disclose the amount she sold each.

“I buy from him, top some money and sell to childless couples,” she said. Following the disappearance of the two children, the police in Imo State declared a manhunt for the couple.

They escaped to Akwa Ibom and started furniture work. It was while there that Mrs. Ogburuonwu started calling him for another “supply” of child. He lived up to expectation and succeeded in stealing a child at Ajangbadi, Ojo, Lagos, by March.

He took the child to Mrs. Ogburuonwu and the business was in the same manner transacted on the roadside and each party departed. Mba said he didn’t know Mrs. Ogburuonwu’s address. He said they only communicated through telephone whenever there was a child to be sold. Before the three children, Mba had also sold a day-old baby delivered for him by his girlfriend.

He said he had to sell the day-old baby because the father of the girl he impregnated objected to his marrying his daughter and also the girl wanted to go back to school.

The girl, he said, was from Mbosi in Anambra State. He noted that when he was faced with the dilemma, one Tofa that he knew at Elele in Rivers State sold the idea of selling the baby when delivered by his girlfriend and it was from there that Tofa, who he said had travelled abroad, introduced Mrs. Ogburuonwu to him.

The baby was sold to her immediately it was delivered. It was there a flourishing business relationship between Mba and Mrs. Ogburuonwu started. Mba did not disclose the amount he sold the baby. Mrs. Ogburuonwu, a mother of three, said she did not know they were stealing the children.

According to her, Mba told her the children were born by imbecile women. She said her husband did not know about this business she was doing.
