Nigerian born Sidney Sam explained that his decision to shun the Super Eagles was because he will do better playing for his motherland Germany.

The Bayer Liverkusen midfielder was a long time target for coach Stephen Keshi in his attempt to booster his midfield options particular with the likely absence of key players from his crucial World Cup qualifier tie against Kenya.
Sam stated as he went on a playing tour of the USA with the German Machines, that his heart has always been with Germany despite the strong interest shown by Nigeria to have him.

“The Nigerian federation worked very hard to get me. But for me it was very clear that I want to play for Germany,” the  the 25-year-old player told Kicker on Wednesday as the German team left for the USA.

They are scheduled to play against Ecuador on May 29 and the US on June 2. Sam is not so sure of being selected by Joachim Loew for the matches. However, he stated that there is no turning back to Nigeria if he wasn’t considered by the coach.

“I don’t think about that at all. I was born in Germany, have been through the selection of teams here, I want to prove myself here.”

Sam had expressed his desire to play for Nigeria last year and this made Keshi to urge the NFF to start with the paper work and every hope having the player was dashed on Monday when he was called by the German coach.
