But in her new track Willow Smith is heard singing about a rather grown up love affair - leading fans to brand Summer Fling 'inapporiate'.
'It's just a couple months but we do it anyway', sings precocious Willow.
The lyrics continue: 'Don't really care what we do tonight. Good night kisses if the mood is right laying by the beach with you wishing this will never end.'
Adopting a strange British accent she says: 'Thanks for the summer fling. It was nice.'
In the video her 'boyfriend' seems to be much older than her as they embark on a fake summer love affair.
A lot of the other actors appear to be older teenagers.
In another somewhat racy scene Wilow is seen jumping on a trampoline with her female friends while her fake boyfriend picks her up off the ground.
One tweet from the Black Youth Project said: 'Smith’s new single, “Summer Fling,” has raised eyebrows due to its subject matter and accompanying video.
'A few op-eds have questioned the idea of a 12-year old having a “summer fling,” and whether or not the whole concept is too mature.'
A more light-hearted tweet from Funny Tweets joked: 'Willow Smith has a tongue ring half her head shaved and is bisegxwal. She needs to go live with her Aunty and Uncle in Bel Air.'
And it isn't just the lyrics that have angered fans - they have also derided her fake English accent too.
Having developed a blossoming reputation in fashion circles courtesy of her distinctive dress sense, Willow no doubt, had a big say in what she wore in the video.
In Summer fling Willow displays her new blonde hairstyle which is tied back with a red bandana with cut off denim shorts and baseball boots.
Despite her tender age Willow has already signed a lucrative record deal with Jay-Z’s Roc Nation record label – the high-point of which being a top ten UK hit with debut single Whip My hair in 2010.
The track – which climbed to number 11 in her native US – earned Willow nominations for Best New Artist and Video of the Year at the BET Awards, but the success would be short-lived.
Indeed, later singles saw a dramatic decline in sales, with second release 21st Century Girl limping to a comparatively poor 99 on the US Billboard and 91 in the UK – while her collaboration with rapper Nicki Minaj on Fireball failed to chart.

This subject is old but I have never answered it in its entirety. And even with this post it will remain incomplete. The question why I would LET Willow cut her hair. First the LET must be challenged. This is a world where women,girls are constantly reminded that they don’t belong to themselves; that their bodies are not their own, nor their power or self determination. I made a promise to endow my little girl with the power to always know that her body, spirit and her mind are HER domain. Willow cut her hair because her beauty, her value, her worth is not measured by the length of her hair. It’s also a statement that claims that even little girls have the RIGHT to own themselves and should not be a slave to even their mother’s deepest insecurities, hopes and desires.
