The 22-year-old was lured to a train station earlier this month in the Orissa region of India by her captors, who told her in a phone call that her mother was sick, according to reports.
They then took her to another location and raped her over several days before returning her to the station.
The assault is alleged to be a revenge attack. The suspects reportedly believe the victim's brother may have been involved in the death of the father of one of the attackers, according to local reports.
Two men and a woman have been arrested over the crime.
The shocking crime comes to light a week after four Indian girls, aged 12 to 14, were abducted from a foster home in Lawada village in Pakur district, and gang raped by up to 20 armed men.
Brutal sex attacks have sparked furious protests in India since the gang rape of a young woman on a Delhi bus in December. The victim later died from her injuries and her death launched a national debate on India's antiquated segxwal assault laws.
An Indian juvenile court will hand down the first verdict later this month in the fatal December gang rape, a defense lawyer said Thursday.
Lawyer Rajesh Tiwari told reporters that his client would learn his fate July 25. The defendant was 17 at the time of the attack and is being tried as a minor on charges including murder and rape.
He faces a maximum sentence of three years at a reform center. Court rules forbid the publication of his name even though he has since turned 18.
The defendant was one of six people accused of tricking the young woman and her male companion into boarding an off-duty bus Dec. 16.
Police say the men then raped and brutalized the woman and savagely beat the man before dumping them on the roadside.
The woman died from her injuries two weeks later in a Singapore hospital.
Four of the other defendants are being tried in a special fast-track court in New Delhi and face the death penalty. The sixth accused was found dead in his jail cell in March.
