Students of the Polytechnic, Ibadan on Monday brought academic activities to a halt as they protested against the epileptic power supply in the institution.
The students, who barricaded the school entrances for over two hours, rendered anti-government slogans during the demonstration.
According to one of the students "Some of the students who preferred anonymity said: “Power supply has been so terrible in the school recently. We stated our plight to the authority. We have been experiencing perpetual darkness at nights in the school since they carried out a repair work on the generator".
“We complained that the situation should be addressed because it is inimical to our career as students. This is an academic environment and we should be given some comfort.”
Those students who preferred anonymity, said there was the need to address the epileptic power supply to the school, particularly at its main campus for smooth academic activities.
Reacting to this the polytechnic Public Relations Officer, Alhaji Soladoye Adewole, who condemned the protest, said the action was needless.
He said, “We once gave them telephone numbers of principal officers so that they can always make complaints and cross-check facts from the school authorities as occasion demands.”
“We understand that the students were not happy about the situation but the matter should have been tabled rather than engaging a protest.”
The angry students were later pacified with a promise that power would be available between 6am and 7am and 8pm to 11pm daily.
