Mr David Parradang, Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), has apologised to Nigerians living in Canada for the problems they encountered in renewing their travel documents.

Parradang made the apology in a statement signed by the Public Relations Officer of the NIS, Mr Chukwuemeka Obua, on Monday, in Abuja.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalled that the Nigerians living in Calgary, a provincial town, had staged a peaceful protest in Ottawa over alleged shoddy treatment they received from officials at the embassy when they went there to renew their travel documents.

The statement denied an online publication that the Nigerians were treated shoddily, attributing the incident to a breakdown in communication between the High Commission in Ottawa and Nigerians living in Calgary.

It said the High Commissioner had approved the deployment of immigration officers to Calgary, to attend to the needs of Nigerians who were earlier booked to renew their travel documents in Ottawa.

According to the statement, the deployment was intended to ease the pressure of travelling long hours to the Canadian capital city by the large number of Nigerians in Calgary.

The statement, however, said the new arrangement was not communicated to the affected Nigerians by the officer in charge at the High Commission, causing them to proceed to Ottawa on the appointed date.

"The High Commissioner, on realising the big mix up, immediately recalled the immigration officers who were waiting at the airport to board a flight to Calgary to return and attend to the Nigerians.

"The CGIS, like the High Commissioner, deeply regrets any inconveniences caused the Nigerians in Canada for whose welfare and needs the Commission and the immigration officers were sent to serve.''

It said the service, under its intervention scheme, would continue to deploy officers to attend to Nigerians in the Diaspora in countries with no exiting or skeletal immigration services.

I read the same content this morning online and I had to laugh.

The apology if anything shows how incompetent Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) and the public servants are.  One can see in the video clearly that some of the Nigerians involved were not only from Calgary but from Toronto area and London Ontario and possibly beyond.
The girl crying in the clip stated emphatically she was from London Ontario.

Why did they book appointments for Ottawa and at the same time traveling to Calgary that is thousands miles away? It does not make sense.
It is all about “Estacode” or travelling allowances at the expense of poor vulnerable Nigerians.

It should also be noted that this charade took place under the watch of our High Commissioner Ojo Maduekwe a former foreign minister not too long ago…..
On his part it is nothing but negligence, incompetence and arrogance …..

It is a big shame.
