THERE has been an upswing in the number of cases of Automated Transfer Machine’s (ATM) unauthorised withdrawals in recent times, as victims point accusing fingers at bank officials and their collaborators for their plight.

Daily, banks are inundated with complaints of such withdrawals, while in most cases, the financial houses have maintained a lackadaisical attitude towards customers’ complaints.

Some aggrieved customers, who spoke with Sunday Tribune, said the unauthorised withdrawals could not take place without the assistance of bank workers as the amounts involved exceeded the N100,000.00 maximum limit allowed per day through the ATM.

One of them, Mrs. Opeyemi Diyaolu said she lost N132,000.00 to ATM fraud, while Mr. Supo Owele lost N400,000.00 in the same process.

Also, Mrs. Justina Chukwuka and Miss. Celine Ojabor, said they lost N123,000.00 and N102,000, respectively to ATM fraud.

According to the aggrieved bank customers, there was no way ATM hackers could have succeeded to withdraw more than N100,000.00 in a day without the connivance with bank workers.

An issue that called for worry was the claims of the aggrieved that their deposits could not be wiped, due to their carelessness.

One of them, Mr. Owele said, he was totally convinced that his deposit was withdrawn by ATM hackers in connivance with bank officials, stating that no one stood around him when he made the last withdrawal from his account.

“The issue of carelessness does not arise. I did not compromise my pin number. No other person knows it and I always make sure that there is nobody around me whenever I want to use the ATM,” Owele said.

Miss Ojabor, said, “how could such an amount be withdrawn from my account without the knowledge of a bank official? Somebody in the bank must know about it because the amount withdrawn is more than the N100,000.00 maximum amount allowed per day”.

Meanwhile, in some other cases, some bank customers, who lost substantial amounts to ATM fraud, did not lose up to the maximum amount allowed per day.

In the case of one Miss Funke Oderinlo, N62,504.00 was withdrawn from her account through the ATM without her knowledge.

However, in all these cases, the aggrieved are yet to get refunds from the various banks concerned.

When contacted, the head of corporate affairs of one of the banks who pleaded anonymity said, there was no way an official of the bank could be involved in such a thing, stating that ATM frauds occur as a result of customers’ carelessness.

He however, said, the bank has a process in place to carry out investigations into such cases.

In the same vein, head of corporate affairs of another bank, said, those affected in such cases must have compromised their ATM pin numbers.

While both bank officials harped on investigation into the cases, they however kept mum on any form of refund for the affected customers.
