Europe Longest Serving Coach Retires After Picking Just One Point In 15-Years

San Marino coach, Giampaolo Mazza has quit his job after his country won just one point during his 85 matches (15 years) in charge of the team.
“The regret is that we never won an official game, but I am proud that we never used a naturalized player,” said Mazza, Europe’s longest-serving national team coach.

“The team has improved in recent years and also we play with courage.”

Mazza took over in 1998 and led the team, which country has a population of 32,000, through the qualifying competition for eight tournaments.

They lost 75 of their 76 matches and finished bottom of their group on each occasion.
Their only positive result in qualifiers came against Latvia, 1-1 away draw in a World Cup qualifier.

It was also their first ever away point.

“It was an epic draw but illusory. It was still the beginning for me and that point made me think that everything would be easier than it turned out.”

His only win was against Liechtenstein 1-0 in a 2004 friendly match, while in 2003 they drew against the same opponents and it was the only match in which they scored more than one goal.

Their heaviest defeat was 13-0 at home to Germany and it was just one of three occasions on which they were on the wrong end of a double-figure scoreline.

In the most recent qualification games, they concede 54 goals in 10 matches – 17 from Ukraine, five from Moldova, 13 from England, nine from Montenegro and 10 from Poland.

San Marino are currently listed joint 207th in Fifa’s world rankings sharing the place with Bhutan and the Turks & Caicos Islands, which is their lowest-ever position they have held since last October.
