According to Premium Times, 24 leading Nigerian academics, researchers and journalists spoke out forcefully against the newly enacted law, urging “civil society and human rights groups to start a campaign that we hope will soon result in its abolition”.
President Jonathan’s administration drew international condemnation after he approved the law that makes it illegal for homosegxwals to even hold meetings.
Under the new law, anyone in a same-sex marriage or union would face up to 14 years in prison.
There were reports some Nigerian gays had already fled the country because of what they said was intolerance of their segxwal persuasion, and more were considering leaving.
