Tuesday’s session of the House of Representatives turned rowdy for over 20 minutes after the Minority Leader, Mr. Femi Gbajabiamila, referred to the Deputy Majority Leader, Mr. Leo Ogor, as “Deputy Minority Leader.”
Gbajabiamila, a member of the All Progressives Congress, had taken the House by surprise, using the opportunity of contributing to a motion to refer to Ogor as minority leader.
Peoples Democratic Party lawmakers were enraged by the development, rushing towards Gbajabiamila in an apparent bid to attack him.
However, APC members also tried to protect Gbajabiamila by encircling him.
APC has a slim majority of 172 members over PDP, which has 171 in the House.
The former has been angling to take over the majority leadership of the House.
There was no formal change in leadership on Tuesday before Gbajabiamila referred to Ogor as the minority leader.
However, the Speaker, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, brought the situation under control when he told Gbajabiamila that he didn’t expect him to behave the way he did.
Tambuwal confirmed to be in possession of a court order barring the House from changing its leadership.
