Joy was arrested three weeks ago in Lagos State following a warrant for her arrest from Bauchi Magistrate’s Court B .
Patience’s father, Ogbaje Joseph, had reportedly made an application before the court, alleging that Joy and her husband, Sunday Idenyi, abducted his daughter.
Joy’s lawyer, Mr. Sunday Adah, told PUNCH Metroon the telephone that the case was initially slated for mention last Tuesday.
He said, “After we (lawyers) had announced our appearances in court, Joseph’s lawyer made an application for the withdrawal of the case.I objected and told the court that Joy had been discredited publicly, following the media reports of her arrest.
“However, my objection was overruled and the court accepted that the case against Joy and her husband be withdrawn.
The suit was consequently struck out.”
PUNCH Metrogathered that after the court proceedings, Patience’s parents asked Joy to produce their daughter.
He said, “I was to leave Bauchi with Joy that day but due to their disturbance, I could no longer do so. Joy had to take refuge inside the court while I went to make a report at the GRA Police Ptation, Bauchi.
A police patrol vehicle accompanied me to the court and took Joy away to the station. That was how Joy and I were able to leave the place.”
Patience, who is taking refuge in an undisclosed location, had in PUNCH Metro February 11, 2014 edition, said her father had told her about marrying her husband when she was 14 years.
She reportedly escaped to Joy’s home at Ojodu/Berger early last year, when she was 17 years, before the marriage.
While in Lagos, she was taken to a non-governmental organisation, Project Alert on Violence Against Women where she made her complaints.
However, a few days after, Patience mother was said to have stormed Joy’s home and taken her back to Bauchi. A month after her marriage, Patience reportedly fled to Lagos again.
Following the publication of her aunt’s arrest and arraignment, the Lagos State Public Advice Centre reportedly petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, saying that Joseph had used his position as a court registrar to manipulate the system and wrongly prosecute Joy.
When PUNCH Metrocontacted Joseph, he did not pick the calls or reply the text message sent to his phone.
Joy was said to have returned to her family in Lagos last Thursday.
