The strike by the College of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) has entered its third month and there is still no foreseeable end.
The striking lecturers and the Federal Government have conducted several meetings, four of which were attended by the Minster of Education, Nyeson Wike, and that of Labor and Productivity, Chukwuemeka Wogu. But the parties did not come to an agreement, as the lecturers insist on improvement of conditions at their schools.
The educational lecturers vow to continue their strike until their demands in some of the critical areas:
1. Provision of funds to arrest the infrastructural decay in the colleges of education.
2. Migration of lower cadre of both academic and none academic staff.
3. Autonomous degree awarding status.
4. Harmonization of conditions of service of tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
6. Forceful implementation of integrated personal information payroll system.
7. Review of extant laws establishing colleges of education in Nigeria.
8 Government should stop the outsourcing of critical services in the colleges, such as security.
9. Funding of accreditation activities.
10. Funding of sabbatical leave.
11. Release of the white paper of the 2012 visitation panel report.
12. Full implementation of the 65years retirement age as provided by the act.
13. Release of the scheme of service by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation.
The union said the demands are directed towards the proper strengthening and development of the colleges of education in Nigeria.
COEASU condemned that the FG had shown a gross lack of interest in not just teacher education but education in general.
The Union reminded that the colleges of education comprise mostly of the children of the less privileged, who are most vulnerable to all sorts of social vices.
It would be noted that Nigeria’s Colleges of Education are supposed to, among others, train teachers who would be able to teach in Nigeria’s primary, secondary, and post secondary schools.
