Another bloody attack by suspected Boko Haram insurgents on Jakana, a village in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State took away lives of 40 residents, The Nation reports.

The victims of the massacre include 2 policemen and 11 elders.

The gunmen also set ablaze houses, shops and generally destroyed more than 80% of the structures.

This tragedy followed a series of attacks launched by terrorists within 2 deadly weeks in Borno and Yobe states which has claimed hundreds of lives.

According to various resources, who spoke with The Nation, the insurgents arrived at about 9:30-10pm on Monday with explosives and petrol-bombs, chanting “God is great” in Arabic, and shooting sporadically. After which they began setting the property on fire and shooting for 3 hours.

One of the residents confirmed the death of 35 people, adding that more victims are expected as some people were trapped in their houses when the insurgents unleashed havoc on both lives and property.

Meanwhile many villagers managed to flee in the bushes and survive, some of them trekked to Maiduguri for safety, and others are taking refuge in the neighbouring villages.

Borno Police Commissioner Mr. Lawal Tanko confirmed the incident without giving the exact number of casualties.

Vanguard reports that there were no soldiers in the village when the attackers struck, adding that 15 women and children between the ages of nine and 12 were found among the victims.
