Maiduguri, Borno State - Adamu Buba is the commander and overall chairman of the Civilian Joint Task Force, Sector 5, operational in Borno State and environs. The father-of-five has coordinated and been involved in multiple pursuits and arrests of Boko Haram terrorist sect members.
The Civilian JTF movement started about nine months ago. Mr. Buba says he joined because the security agencies were killing innocent residents of Maiduguri, and his aim is to help the military JTF to identify and fight the real Boko Haram insurgents.
He narrates that his wife alerted him when the terrorists attacked Giwa Barracks. He and other Civilian JTF members quickly organized themselves and drove to the scene of the attacks with four Toyota Hilux trucks donated by the state government. Military men advised the vigilante fighters to lie and roll on the ground rather than walk straight up.
Mr. Buba says they met people escaping from the scene of the attack and fleeing for safety, but their group faced the Boko Haram terrorists "head on".
He says the insurgents were under the impression that the Civilian JTF fighters use charms to be confront them without fear, that's why they became scared of the vigilante warriors. In that fight, the Civilian JTF, Sector 5, lost three of their members, and Mr. Buba had to call his team to retreat to prevent more losses.
He says the Nigerian Army had information on the upcoming attack 5 months prior to it, so they were on alert.
Mr. Buba says the Civilian JTF units are operating only in Maiduguri right now, but they've gone to Adamawa and Yobe states for several operations.
He discloses that to differentiate themselves from the Boko Haram members and not to get killed in the crossfire between the Army and the isurgents, Civilian JTF fighters tie a piece of white nylon cloth on their left hand. He adds that the group don't have guns and mostly uses machetes, daggers and sticks; this also helps the soldiers of the Army to identify them.

As for financial support, Mr. Buba says they get donations from the Every Nigerian Do Something foundation. Most recently, the ENDS foundation has donated 50 tasers, 25 pepper spray canisters and 16 walkie-talkies. Residents of Maiduguri metropolis also contribute by buying daggers, sticks and machetes, sometimes donating money. However, the vigilante group members buy most of the weapons with their own money.
The Civilian JTF has become a vital part of the war against the dreaded Boko Haram terrorist sect which has been expelled to operate from outside the fringes of society. The vigilante fighters have captured and neutralized hundreds of terrorists.
