The relatives of Isaac Akere,  one of the nine victims of the boat accident which occurred in Lagos in April, have said his former wife, Feyi Akere, had been presented with document to prove that she was no longer married to their son before his death.

But Feyi threatened to bury her husband alone if the family refused to meet with her and also release her children to her.

Isaac was one of the nine victims of the boat accident which occurred in Lagos in April.

Our correspondent had reported that Isaac died with his fiancée, Foluke, a week to their wedding, while travelling from Ebute Ero, Lagos Island to Majidun, Ikorodu.

Feyi had surfaced after the incident to say she was the legal wife of the deceased and that she was not aware he was planning to remarry.

Isaac’s family, in its reaction, had insisted that Feyi and Isaac were divorced.

However, after a mass burial of the victims by the Lagos State Government, the deceased could not be buried because Feyi reportedly wrote to the management of the Lagos General Hospital, Lagos Island, not to release his corpse without her authority.

But the lawyer for Akere family, Bamidele Olayemi, said the family had obtained all the divorce documents and had served Feyi’s lawyer the documents.

He said, “We have obtained all the documents to show the world that there is no marriage between Isaac Akere and Feyi. This is also to buttress our point that she has no right over his corpse and I am still wondering why the mortuary management is still holding on to the body despite the documents I attached to the letter I wrote to them.

“They are to follow what the law says and not operate under sentiment which is what I see here. I see no reason why they should still be keeping his body because Feyi wrote them a letter.”

Our correspondent was shown three court documents namely – certificate of dissolution of marriage, a court judgment, a certificate of decree absolute.

The divorce certificate was dated April 23, 2014 and issued by Justice O.O. Majekodunmi of the High Court of Justice, Ogun State.

Olayemi told our correspondent that the court judgment gave custody of the children to Isaac, and the family had taken over his role since his demise.

“And someone who had left her children while they were toddlers; why should she be laying claims to them now? She suddenly remembers that she has children because she wants to have a hold on Isaac’s property, which the family will not allow,” Olayemi said.

He appealed to the government to compel the management of the Island General Hospital to release the remains of the deceased to the family.

But speaking through her lawyer, Debo Olufeko, Feyi said she must have her two kids back, adding that she had yet to receive any divorce certificate purportedly issued by a Sagamu High Court in Ogun State.

Olufeko said, “As far as we are concerned, my client is the legal wife of Isaac and she has the right to decide what happens to his corpse. I went to court and checked the records without seeing any divorce certificate. If there is any, let the family bring it to me. I have tried many times to contact Isaac’s family through the lawyer, to see the court documents, but the efforts have been frustrated.

“These people are not interested in settlement. I don’t know what they are after. They are still keeping to my client’s children. We have invited them for mediation, but they refused.

“I have told them and written them that if they don’t meet me, my client will bury the corpse. I have written a letter to them and gone to their office. If they don’t do anything, we will take steps so that the corpse can be buried.

Efforts to reach the management of the Lagos General Hospital were abortive as all the official lines were not reachable.
