Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, have recovered 1.370 kilogramme of whitish powdery substance that tested positive for cocaine from one Ifeanyi Nriagwu.

Our correspondent learnt that the drug, which was sealed in parcels and kept inside a laptop bag, was found after a thorough search of the smuggler’s luggage.

The 34-year-old suspect, who hails from Anambra, was caught at the departure hall during the screening of passengers on a Turkish flight.

The Commander of the NDLEA at the MMIA, Mr. Hamza Umar, said, “The suspect was found with two parcels of cocaine industrially hidden by the sides of his laptop bag. He was detected on his way to Turkey from where he would have proceeded to South Sudan. The drug tested positive for cocaine and weighed 1.370kg.”

Nriagwu said he embarked on the mission in anticipation of a $3,500 (₦568,000) reward which he could have used to take care of his family as no one was ready to assist him.

“I wanted to use the $3,500 I was promised to take care of my personal problems. I relocated to South Sudan in January 2013. I am married with a child but I am unable to care for my family due to financial constraint. This was why I got involved,” Nriagwu said.

The NDLEA Chairman, Mr. Ahmadu Giade, said the agency would continue to engage in both drug supply and demand reduction activities towards achieving a drug-free Nigeria.

“We will continue to pursue the mandate of the agency with all diligence. We shall cut off the supply of drug through arrests and prosecution of drug traffickers. We shall also intensify our anti-drug abuse public enlightenment programmes,” Giade said.

Regardless of reasons to be a drug smuggler
You’ll be going to jail for $3500.00 …that’s peanuts
….and that’s dumb of you.
