Ibadan — Oyo State Sector Commander, Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC),Mr. David Mende, said yesterday in Ibadan, that the state recorded 4,000 okada-related accidents between January and May this year.

Mende said victims of the accidents were admitted at the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan, and attributed the accidents to drunk-driving.

The FRSC Chief, at a Safety Awareness Campaign /Distribution of Safety Helmets, said most traffic crashes were as a result of alcohol consumption.

He said, "in order to stem the tide of drunk-related road traffic crashes, consumers of alcohol should adopt a responsive and cautious approach towards alcohol consumption and abide by the "Don' t Drink and Drive slogan."

Mende, while reiterating the danger inherent in alcohol consumption, said "the core thrust of this awareness campaign is to educate the general public on the need to drink responsively without allowing it to be a threat to the safety of our lives and that of other road users."

He expressed the commitment of FRSC towards reducing road carnages, imploring corporate organisations to be socially responsible by collaborating with the Commission in any area of their statutory mandates in ensuring safety of lives and property.

State Chairman, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lateef Akanni Salako, while speaking at the ceremony, commended the FRSC for ensuring sane driving and for reducing carnages on the road. Salako charged Okada riders to be extra careful while on duty.
