At least two persons have been feared killed and 20 others hospitalised in various hospitals in Plateau State after consuming excessive quantity of salt and bitter kola to prevent Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) attack.

The two, according to a source in Shendam who spoke with our reporter on phone, were rushed to the hospital by their family members after they suddenly collapsed in the morning, having consumed too much of salt over night. They later died of high blood pressure in the hospitals.

According to medical personnel in the hospitals where the other patients are currently taking treatment in Jos, some developed ulcer, while others stool profusely, having consumed the table salt in excess.

What do you expect them to do. Although Nigeria has a high literacy rate, the things they do make us all look like numbskulls!  Where were credible tests carried out to conclude that kola nuts and salt can cure Ebola. Nigeria is fast becoming a laughing stock. Professor Iwu who started this "kolanut saviour" lark has stated that "tests are still in the early stages. Research is till going on. And it is hoped that if the compound continues to prove successful the US Food and Drug Administration will put it on a fast track and produce drugs for humans within a matter of YEARS."

Has it proved successful. I have not heard so?

It WAS traditional native healers in Iwu's village  that said they have used the plant for the treatment of infectious diseases for centuries. Professor Iwu who also comes from a family of traditional healers has said that the same forest that yields the dreaded Ebola virus COULD be a source of the cure.”

I believe there are plants and herbs out in the wild that can cure certain ailments (after all most medicines used around the world are derived from plants) but I am not convinced that for CENTURIES these tradional healers have been using the plant to cure infectious diseases. If it were in another part of the world - and after centuries of trial and error "and curing infectiuos diseases" - the medication would by now be tried and tested in a controlled environment and a VERDICT given.

IF YOU THINK YOU HAVE THE SYMPTOMS GO FOR MEDICAL HELP. PERIOD

I remember posting yesterday that those who rely on salt or cola nuts to treat Ebola were condemning themselves to death - I didn't expect it to turn out quite like this. The people who spread those lies have blood on their hands.
