ABUJA—Level 14 officers and above in the Civil Service will start promotion examination to the next cadre today. Officers in this cadre are those that are chiefs, assistant directors and deputy directors aspiring to move to the next level of assistant directors, deputy directors and directors.
According to the new guidelines, permanent secretaries are expected to spend a maximum of 8 years and go into retirement to create space for other growing civil servants.
A source in one of the ministries revealed that promotions are stagnated for several years “but our prayer is that the reforms will usher in a new lease of life as some of us have remained in one level since we joined the civil service 8 years ago while the Civil Service Rule says promotions should be carried out every 3 years.
“What we are experiencing these days is an unnecessary delay of promotion examinations results for cadres in the lower rung.’’
It could be recalled that recently the Federal Government had given retirement letters to permanent secretaries that had served more than 8 years in the Civil Service.

Kudos to this legislation. most people in naija dont see the point of advancing themselves futher. thats why we had not been able to handle the chanllenges of the 21st century because our leaders uses old methods. I srgest they do it every two to three years.

When there is an ardent supporter of a particular party and this party is in power will the Permanent Secretary be given retirement papers when the 8 years are up. There is always corruption and so one has to keep in mind that Politicians will twist the same legislature to suit his/her party.
Godly WISDOM is to Fear God. His UNDERSTANDING is to resist the devil.
