Mr Peter Obi, the immediate past governor of Anambra State, is a honorary adviser to President Goodluck Jonathan. Obi shares his perspective on the 2015 polls in this interview.

Do you agree that Buhari has the capacity to stop Boko Haram if elected?

Gen. Buhari, as a respected, retired general and as an elder statesman, does not need an invitation, an appointment or an elective office to intervene on any national issue, especially issues of national security like the one facing the country at the moment. Elder statesmen all over the world do not wait to be invited before they step forward on matters of grave concern to their fatherland.

President Jonathan is running round sleeplessly and working with security agencies, in addition to forging bilateral ties to solve these problems. He will certainly be very glad to receive any suggestions from Buhari and I can assure you that Nigerians will be glad if he helps solve the problem as an elder statesman. He has said that he will summon a meeting of serving and retired generals to help solve the problem if elected, but he does not need to be elected to do so.

But some people are saying that he can deal with Boko Haram, the way he dealt with the Maitatsine unrest decades ago.
Buhari and Jonathan

I have read in some places where the APC said that because Buhari stopped Maitaitsine in the 80s, he will also stop Boko today. I disagree entirely with this claim, because the stable global environment of the 80s cannot be compared with the volatile and terror-enveloped global environment of today. The socio-religious realities that threw up the Maitaisine group are different from the realities that threw up Boko Haram.

In the 80s, most countries were stable, but today the global instability, cutting across nations like Iraq, Syria and the Middle East, has created a labyrinth of terror. This is in addition to our African neighbours, , like Libya, Egypt, Somalia, Sudan, Kenya, Tunisia and others, which are all facing various forms of instability and terrorist activities. The level of sophistication in technology and military hardware is also totally different today.  No one would have ever imagined in the 80s that terrorists would go into the US and bomb the World Trade Centre, or attack   the Pentagon. But   we all saw it happen.

These are realities that need to shape our understanding of the world of today. What is happening has a global coloration, because the ISIS flag is the flag you see with Alshaba in Somalia and Boko Haram in Nigeria. You can now see why we cannot compare yesterday with what we are seeing today. Who would have thought that Nigerians would turn into suicide bombers?

Personally, I don't see both as good candidates for the post of the president. A coup plotter giving 100% assurance of curtailing BH if voted in as president should be checked. Like Gov Obi said, if he has the interest of the nation at heart, he shouldn't wait to be in office to proffer solution or assist knowing it's security of lives and properties that are involved here. His consistent assurance in destroying BH if voted in makes me feel there is something he knows about BH and he's not telling Nigerians. Is BH our only problem in naija? Definitely not! He is just too old for the seat. Dem forbid us to have 40 year old on dat seat? In like manner, I also do not see GEJ as a good candidate. If over a year of Boko Haram wahala's and months of still searching for Chibok girls and nothing has been done despite US, UK and other nations interventions, then only God can save us. A president who party when his house is on fire should go for brain check. Only in this regime, I got to know the word - CABAL. Only in this regime I saw parents crying over their missing children, while the office of the first family party and send their adopted child and son in-law abroad on honey moon. Couldn't they for the love of the nation mourn with these families by making the honeymoon low keyed? My question is what has GEJ got to offer? Unemployment everywhere; PHCN giving bills for darkness; Innocent students going down for a crime they did not commit. Can anyone beat his or her chest to tell me that GEJ did not hear about the 4 uniport boys that were wrongly murdered? Why is he not saying anything about it even when those involved were caught? Or do I also believe it's because Ijaw and Rivers are almost like brother and sister? If Amaechi as failed in that area, GEJ should have asked questions regarding those kids. Anyway, no one can deceive God. See how he disgrace and dealt with both of them towards the end time. GEJ had the opportunities to make Nigeria a better place given that he had come along way with Government officials  but he never use them rather he choose to act wrongly as instructed by godfathers. Lets truth be told, Nigerians don't have a candidate yet. I rather keep my vote than stay in the sun to vote for any of this old men who obviously are out for their selfish interests -  monies and power.

Gutless post.
.…you don’t have to vote for the Grand-Pa or respect him
….but don’t wish him death if you want to attain the age of 72…
….I thought you are you’re cultured.
What has Peter Obi done for his state? Nothing but looting…like every Nigerian politician.

The APC has been consistent in saying that the PDPhas ruled Nigeria for 16 disastrous years in whichcorruption, impunity, insurgency, armed robbery andseveral ills of society held sway, but at a very closelook at the APC, I am seeingAmaechi - 8yrs speaker; 7yrs governor under PDP,Atiku - 8yrs Vice president under PDP,Akume - 8yrs governor under PDP,Bukola Saraki - 8yrs governor; 2yrs Senator underPDP,Timipre Sylva -4yrs governor under PDP,Audu Ogbe - 2yrs chairman of PDP,Aminu Masari - 4yrs Reps speaker under PDP,Chris Ngige - 3yrs governor under PDP,Kwankwaso - 7yrs governor,3yrs Defense ministerunder PDP,El rufai - 4yrs FCT minister, 2yrs BPE chairman underPDP...and to cap it all they went to OBJ begging, a manwho spent 8 of the disastrous 16yrs as the maximumruler of Nigeria to come and lead them on a rescuemission. It is now clearer that APC is a waste basket of the PDP,where the people who created and perpetuated the "16 Disastrous years" are now dumped. ..pleaseNigerians what is the change in this APC?

The fact is simple; we have no functional government.
When you are in power you can do a lot for the people.
Age is not the factor but the society is too materialistic and tribalistic.
The prodigality of our current politicians is absurd.....
.....from state weddings to birthdays and so on.....
.....infrastructure does not exist, pensioners are not being paid for years likewise workers and so on.
A 40 year old can also be very reckless pure and simple.

It is insane to be having state weddings and birthdays when over 300 hundred kids are in still in captivity.

We’ve been through an era of coup plotting but what we have now is fragile democracy.
…….a coup plotter can also become a good leader.
…….but no one is plotting a coup as I understand it.
…….but the army has done so much damage to this country.
…….and it all began in 1966.

Age ain't nothing but a number, obi thieves lyk you would nt want buhari bcos kuje is waiting 4 you, I pity da illetrates falling for ur lies, if I may ask all you block heads 1 what is happening to poverty, 2 what is happening to unemployment, 3 what is happening to inequality. That's a yardstick of measuring development. According to dudley seers. If the three are on a high development has not taken place. Even if the GDP is on the rise, all you fools who use religion or tribe as ur yardstick would continue to dweel in the vicious circle of poverty bcos u lack eyes to see, knowledge to butress ur point finally to dull to analyse matters,
