Members of Afenifere, a socio-cultural organization for the Yoruba people of Nigeria, expressed their readiness to support President Goodluck Jonathan in the 2015 presidential elections.
This became known during the meeting of Afenifere members and the President at the residence of Afenifere leader, Chief Reuben Fasanranti in Akure, the Ondo state capital on Tuesday.
Explaining the group’s decision to endorse the President, spokesman for the group, Yinka Odumakin, said, “Afenifere supports the President’s reelection because he had the courage to convoke the national conference and we hope that he will implement the report. The President expressed the commitment that he will adopt the report within 12 months of returning to office.”
After seeing Afenifere members the President had a close door meeting with the group’s leaders including its National leader, Reuben Fasonrati. Others present at the meeting included Olu Falae, Ayo Adebanjo, Iyiola Omisore, Gbenga Daniel and Peter Obi. The aim of the visit is believed to be the crisis rocking the PDP in the state.
A month earlier the group’s Chairman in Lagos State, Chief Supo Shonibare, said that there was a possibility that the Afenifere would support the former military Head of State in 2015, though the group was very uncomfortable with Buhari’s political associates, whom he described as political predators.
