Tragedy struck in Oyo State during the accreditation exercise for the Presidential and National Assembly elections held yesterday when a man slumped and died after he was accredited in Ward Two, Unit Two in Ibarapa Central Local Government Area of the state.

As at the time of filing this report, the identity of the victim had not been determined. The unfortunate incident predictably tainted the otherwise smooth exercise, which had witnessed a huge turnout of eligible voters in different parts of Oyo State.

Some of the places visited in Ibadan metropolis include Eleyele, Mokola, Yemetu, Kannike, Beere, Isale Ijebu, Idi Arere, Bode, Molete, Olomi, Olunde and Owode Academy, Agodi Gate, Iwo Road and Ojoo.

Accreditation of voters started early and voting proceeded as scheduled in many of the places visited.

But reports from Okeho in Kajola Local Government in Oke-Ogun axis of the state revealed that the card readers deployed for the accreditation exercise did not recognise the fingerprints of some of the registered voters, many of them being farmers.

The card readers were said to have authenticated the permanent voter cards (PVCs) brought to the polling units by the farmers. But the farmers were reportedly accredited when the available evidence showed that they were genuine owners of the PVCs.

The police also arrested a middle-aged man, Bello Waheed in Olorunda Market in Lagelu Local Government Area, who allegedly presented a fake PVC at the polling unit. He was immediately taken to the police headquarters, Eleyele, Ibadan.

There were reports that ballot papers did not get to Idi-Igbaro, Ologuneru, Agodi-Gate in Ibadan as at 4p.m yesterday.

Meanwhile, the General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Mechanised Division, Nigerian Army, Major General Sani Muazu, said he was happy with what he saw when he monitored the elections.
