A 32-year-old business man, Ndubisi Akpan, who allegedly beat a man to coma, was on Tuesday docked in a Wuse Zone 2 Senior Magistrates’ Court in Abuja.
According to the prosecutor, Sgt. Abdullahi Alhassan, Akpan, a resident of Gosa, along Airport Road in Abuja, was standing trial on a three-count charge of criminal force, assault and causing bodily harm.
The prosecutor told the court that Akpan committed the offence on April 9, though a witness to the incident, Monday Paul lodged a complaint at the Mabushi Police Station.
Alhassan said Akpan committed the offence because the victim prevented a commercial vehicle meant to convey some bags of cement bought by him from a depot.
The prosecutor further said the accused had been convicted previously for a similar offence.
Alhassan noted that the offence was contrary to Sections 265 and 246 of the Penal Code.
When the charges were read, Akpan however denied the allegations and pleaded not guilty.
Consequently, Magistrate Aliyu Shafa granted the accused bail in the sum of N300, 000 with one surety in like sum, adding that the surety must reside within the court’s jurisdiction.
