The sacked Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba CFR (Rtd) has handed over the leadership of Nigerian Police Force to Ag. IGP Solomon Arase.

Recall that President Jonathan sacked Suleiman Abba on Tuesday without any prior knowledge and appointed DIG Solomon Arase as Acting IGP with immediate effect. After all the hullabaloo, Abba has officially handed over the baton to Arase. The handing over ceremony took place today at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.

IGP Suleiman Abba, NPM, NPOM, mni was the 17th Indigenous Inspector-General of Police and was appointed by President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR. He formally took over on August 1, 2014 from former Police boss,IGP MD Abubakar (Rtd) . Abba Suleiman hails from Gwaram Local Government Area of Jigawa State holds degrees in History and Law and has attended several management and security courses within and outside Nigeria. He is an alumnus of the National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos.

Until his appointment as Mr. Abba’s replacement, Mr. Arase was the Head of the Force Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Department.
Mr. Arase holds Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Law, as well as Bachelors and Masters Degrees in Political Science and Strategic Studies.
He is also a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence College.
Legisreports describes him as "a gentleman, terrific policeman," and writes the following paragraph about him: "There is a myth, perhaps a common one that the Nigerian Police Force (NPF) is not your friend.

The sudden sack of the former Police IG came as a shock to many, hence the various reactions it generated. Although everyone thinks the sack is politically-motivated, top Nigerian lawyer, Festus Keyamo has said that more drama awaits Nigerians before May 29.



More Details
Mr. Arase, 59, was born on June 21, 1956. He hails from Oredo Local Government Area of Edo state. He enlisted into the Nigerian Police on December 1, 1981 after graduating from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, in 1980, with a degree in Political Science.

A lawyer, Mr. Arase also has a Bachelor of Law degree and Masters of Law from the University of Benin and University of Lagos respectively. He attended the Nigerian Law school and was called to the bar in 2000.
He also has a Master’s Degree in Strategic Studies from the University of Ibadan.

Mr. Arase has served in various commands and formations of the Nigerian police, including being the Commissioner of Police for Akwa Ibom State. He was also an Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Bureau. He served at the United Nations Mission in Namibia and is a Fellow of the Nigerian Defence College.

Mr. Arase is due for retirement on June 21, 2016.
