Suspected cult members have laid siege to Aladja in Udu Local Government Area, Delta State, molesting, maiming, stealing and intimidating residents at will.
In one of the attacks, Vanguard can authoritatively report, they raped a woman (names withheld) in the presence of her husband, Tuesday, after stealing money and other personal effects of the victims and other residents of Aladja.
In the rape incident, Vanguard learned that the suspected cultists, numbering seven, stormed the residence of their victims at Iwhre Quarters, stole unspecified amount of cash, phones, placed a gun on the man’s head with a threat to shoot if he tried to stop them, as they took turns to rape his wife.
Vanguard gathered that while the rape was on in Iwhre Quarters, other members of another cult group were robbing other families in Obuvu Quarters, using charms. The helpless husband of the raped victim could not speak to Vanguard as tears welled up in his eyes, pleading not to be photographed.
Some residents of Aladja have started packing out of the community in their numbers, especially for fear of being raped.
Victims’ story
When Vanguard visited Aladja, some shops were still under lock as the cultists now operate in broad daylight unhindered.
One of the victims, a resident of Ubada-Ode Quarters, who spoke on condition of anonymity, expressed shock at the manner the cultists operate. She said they ransacked her apartment, took her mobile phone and over N10,000. She said neighbours did not respond to her cry for help out of fear.
Another victim, also in the same Ubada-Ode area, claimed that the cultists entered her apartment through the window and stole N50,000 and about 13 mobile phones, including her own and that of other persons she was charging in her residence.
She said because of the sound of her generator, none of her neighbours could hear when she tried to alert them by shouting.
Challenge for security agencies
Meanwhile, a member of Aladja Vigilante, who craved anonymity, called on the relevant security agencies and community leaders to rise to the challenge of the cultists, with a view to arresting them.
He called on the residents to feed them and the police with relevant information that could lead to arrest of suspected cultists around them.
The vigilante member also called on the community and Delta State government to motivate and provide the needed logistics for the vigilante group to enable it function optimally.
Contacted on phone, Delta State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Celestina Kalu, said: “I have not been briefed, but cultism is on the rise in Delta State. We are doing everything to deal with this ugly trend; it shall be a thing of the past soon.”
