Onitsha market demolished by Gov. Peter Obi in 2013
We’ve nowhere else to go, Onitsha bridgehead traders lament……
Gov. Obi & Commissioner for Local Govt, Azuka Enemuo Tales of woe and despondency hung in the air as bulldozers deployed by the Anambra State Government roared through all the markets on the River Niger bridgehead end of the Onitsha – Enugu Expressway some days ago.
Shops and stalls gave way under the crushing impact of the bulldozers and the dreams of the affected traders in these markets vanished in the air.
It was the climax of a running battle with Governor Peter Obi, who had vowed to dislodge traders from the ‘illegal’ markets some months.
Not even allegations by Yoruba and Hausa traders that the plan to demolish the markets smacked of an ethnic agenda could do anything to sway the governor. He was determined to rid the highway of the markets.
The demolition of the markets was to give room for a beautification project that Obi had for more than six years planned to execute in Onitsha, the hotbed and commercial hub of Anambra State.
At one end of the bridgehead markets, distraught traders watched helplessly while bulldozers and other heavy equipment went to work crushing their shops and market stalls. At another end, where the demolition had yet to begin, hundreds of the traders scurried in and out of their shops like soldier ants to salvage what was left of their wares.
Mainly affected were the sections where goats, fruits, tomatoes, mattresses and some other items were sold. The demolitions did not only affect markets, as all the motor parks along the road were cleared.
A similar exercise near the River Niger Bridge four months ago nearly degenerated to an ethno-religious crisis when the mosque used by Hausa and Yoruba traders was demolished alongside other structures in the area.
It was only on Saturday that the Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, Chief Joe-Martins Uzodike, announced at a press briefing in Awka that the State Executive Council had taken a decision to demolish all markets along the expressway to give room for the beautification of Onitsha the gateway to the state.
Still counting their losses, most of the traders interviewed by SATURDAY PEOPLE could only lament the loss of the source of living they had been used to over many years.
Nobody, not even journalists, was allowed too close. Nobody was allowed to take pictures. Those who dared did so discreetly with their mobile phones.
