The leader of market women in Ado-Ekiti, Chief (Mrs) Waye Oso, was on Monday arrested and detained at the state police headquarters in controversial circumstances.

The market leader, who spoke on the phone from police detention at about 8.30 pm, claimed that she was arrested and detained on the orders of Governor Ayo Fayose.

Mrs. Oso said the governor ordered her arrest insisting she must produce over N93 million purportedly raked in from the shops allocated to market women by the Kayode Fayemi administration.

According to her, she never collected any money from the Fayemi administration on the land and the shops allocated wondering where the Fayose government ‘manufactured’ the N93 million figure from.

She said that she was picked up at her residence in Ekute area of Ado-Ekiti after some policemen had laid siege to her house.

She explained that the policemen told her that the governor had ordered her arrest to produce the the said N93 million.

Oso said she knew nothing about the N93 million claim by the government and she never embezzled any money

She recalled that Fayose arrested and detained her twice during his first term in power and the bus donated to the market women was forcibly taken away from her on the street.

Oso said she had never heard of anywhere in Yoruba land or any part of Nigeria where the leader of market women had been so humiliated.

She said she had contacted her lawyer, Otunba Bisi Egbeyemi on the development.

Mrs Oso said: “It was Fayemi that approached Oodua Investment to give us the land at Textile area to open up a the place as an alternative market when he (Fayemi) said he wanted to demolish the main market but the market women advised him against such and he agreed.

“Fayemi helped us to facilitate the arrangement with Oodua Group and promised to give all the documents to me (Iyaloja) and work was going on before the governorship election which he lost.

“Oodua agreed with us and we pay N3,000 per shop every year but Fayose government now came and asked us to be paying N10,000 per square metre.

“Following the fire that gutted the main market (Oja Oba), Fayose promised to demolish it and build a new one and order that he move to the Awedele (Textile) Market.

“We contributed money, we were working on the place to clear the bus and pave the way to the shops in the market when agents of government came and ordered us to stop work that we should come and obtain form.

“We were all shocked that what forms are we going to obtain again on a land Fayemi gave to us free of charge? I want you to remember that he (Fayose) arrested and detained me two times during his last administration and the bus donated to our association by Governor Adebayo was forcible taken away from me on the streets.

“It is very shocking that I am being humiliated like this because I have never heard of any part of Yoruba land where an Iyaloja is given this unfair treatment.”

But the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Idowu Adelusi, said Fayose had nothing to do with Mrs. Oso’s arrest

Adelusi said: “The issue had nothing to do with the governor, it was the police that arrested her over allegation that borders on fraud and it is the CP that should be called to respond to her allegation. This has nothing to do with the governor at all, it was the police that arrested her.”

Efforts to speak with the Police Public Relations Officer, Alberto Adeyemi, were unsuccessful at press time, as he did not answer calls put across to him.
