CHRONIC DEBTORS: Abike Dabiri-Erewa Refutes Owing Diamond Bank N122m

The former Chairman, House of Representatives Committee on the Diaspora, Mrs. Abike Dabiri-Erewa has refuted report in a newspaper (not Daily Sun) that she was one of the delinquent debtors owin Diamond Bank a whooping sum of N121 million as a non-performing loan.

Nigerian Deposit Money Banks have since Monday commenced a policy of listing the names of companies and individuals owing banks.

However, Dabiri-Erewa took to an online channel to debunk the report, saying that she does not owe any company and has never heard of the company associated with her name in the report.

“Shocked to see my pic in Punch. Said to owe N100 million linked to some co. I owe no one, not even myself?  Haba!Punch.  Must be mistaken identity. Also writing Diamond bank and CBN to set the records straight. Definitely not me.!!

“Never even heard the name of the co! Will get to the bottom of this! As to detractors, you can’t get me Will remain my calm, honest self ,Shame on you,” she lamented.

The banks, which had published the list of their delinquent debtors were Zenith Bank Plc, Guaranty Trust Bank Plc, Union Bank Plc, Sterling Bank Plc, Skye Bank Plc, Fidelity Bank Plc, Stanbic IBTC Bank, Heritage Bank Limited and Enterprise Bank Limited, First Bank of Nigeria Limited,Access Bank Plc, Diamond Bank Plc and Unity Bank Plc.

First Bank, which has its total amount of non-performing loans as N43.72 billion, published 92 names of delinquent debtors. The first five companies on the lender’s list owe a combined sum of N23 billion. These are Ajaokuta Steel Company Limited, Starcomm Plc; BGL Securities Limited, where a former Minister of Finance and National Planning, Kalu Idika Kalu, is a director; Shield Petroleum Limited and Fargo Petroleum and Gas Limited. Shield Petroleum, the number one on the list, owes N6.883 billion; while Zurich International Service, the last on the list, owes N26.69 million.

Unity Bank also released 260 names of delinquent debtors with a combined NPL figure of N45.52 billion. The list has the companies of some prominent Nigerians.

These include Umar Mutallab’s DeanShanger Project Limited, N3.6 billion; Senator Ayodele Arise and a former Minister of State for Works, Mr. Dayo Adeyeye’s International Payment Devices Limited, N81.9 million; and Prince Adeyanju Olateru-Olagbegi’s Cupid Investment BDC, N90.1 million.

Other prominent companies on the list are Ekiti Kete Mass Transit, which owes N991million; Fargo Petroleum and Gas Limited, N2.5billion; Ava Cement Limited, N.8billion; and Plywood Chemical and Accessories, N1.1billion. Ava Cement topped Unity Bank’s debtors’ list with N9.8billion, while Malcolm Akpokodje owes the least with N20million.

Zenith Bank, which was the next on the lists of banks owed had about N14.441billion in the NPLs, published 37 names of debtor companies and individuals. Enterprise Bank, one of the three bridge banks published the highest number of debtors comprise of 408 with N14.309billion. Skye Bank, which had about N13.3billion in the NPLs, published 107 names of debtor companies and individuals. Stanbic IBTC accounted for N8.149billion bad loans, while the delinquent debtors’ list comprises 46 names. Fidelity Bank was owed N6.66billion as the total published NPL figure, which has a telecoms company, Starcomms, topping its list of delinquent debtors with approximately N3billion debt. Other companies on the list are mostly energy, oil and gas companies. The total number of debtors on the list is 28. Also, 39 debtors owed Guaranty Trust Bank over N4.016billion with Ekiti Tutors C.M.S and Silver Print Oil & Gas Ltd topping the lists of debtors. Sterling Bank is owed about N3.37billion by workers’ unions, consultancy firms and other companies. However, going by the CBN’s directive, all the 19 banks as well as discount houses in the country are expected to publish the names of their delinquent debtors by August ending.
