Homicide squad of Imo State Police Command yesterday smashed a ritual syndicate in the state.
Parading the suspects before newsmen in Owerri, acting Commissioner of Police, Dave Akinremi, said operatives acting on a tip-off arrested one Joy Emmanuel, a member of the syndicate, who is a nurse resident at Amafeke, Orlu, and a native of Eziobodo in Owerri West Local Government.
The suspect, the commissioner said, conspired with one Blessing Emmanuel from Ini in Akwa Ibom State, who was delivered of a set of twins to sell one of the babies to a native doctor for N100,000.
Other members of the syndicate arrested, according to the commissioner, include Basilia Okeke, a native of Umuegbe, Amafeke, Orlu; Ijeoma Ebuke, native of Umueze-ugah in Anambra State, but residing at Akwakuma, Okpru Orlu, Willi Emmanuel of Okpotong in Ini, Akwa Ibom State; Kate Nwachukwu, of Amauzari, Amaraku in Isiala-Mbano, but resident at Ebenese Umueze-Nnachi, Ihiama, Orlu; and Ifeoma Ebemere of Umudu Amafeke, Orlu.
Also, the commissioner said the command, following a tip-off arrested one Samuel Ngozi, a native of Isiala Ngwa South in Abia State, who claimed to be a senior Army officer of the rank of major, while terrorising citizens of Nekede in Owerri West. He said the suspect was arrested in army uniform and was found to be a fake officer, pointing out that the suspect would soon be charged to court for impersonation and attempt to commit felony.
He paraded over 20 suspects involved in various crimes, including armed robbery.
He said acting on information, operatives of the command arrested a 33 year-old leader of a gang, specialising in car snatching, Kelechi Ogbonna, who is a native of Amaeze, in Isiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State but resides at Nekede Road in Owerri West.
According to the police boss, the suspect who is a specialist in removing cars from where they were parked with an extraordinary master key, was arrested while attempting to steal a red colour Honda CRV Jeep with registration No LND 768FL belonging to one Mr. Ihewuba Oguzie of 3 Umez Eronini Street, Ikenegbu layout Owerri.
