Gistmania reports that the armed robbers, who arrived in a speedboat to the Marine beach at about 12.30am, were on a mission to steal the station’s gunboat and other ammunition before the attack was repelled by the policemen.
Policemen from the Epe division, the Rapid Response Squad and the Counter-Terrorism Unit were said to have been mobilized to the scene to repel the attack before the robbers fled.
“The gunfire lasted for several minutes, and the whole area was riddled with bullets. Eventually, they succeeded in sinking the gunboat. No policeman was killed but some might have been injured by the bullets,”
The state commissioner of police, Fatai Owoseni, was reported to have stormed the station on Sunday to assess the level of damage as the state’s Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), Joe Offor, also confirmed the attack, informing that on the orders of the Owoseni, the area will soon be electrified and the gunboat replaced.
According to the PPRO:
“The area commander, the DPO and other officers have made efforts to recover the gunboat. We are still working on it and we have fortified the area. Banks have been asked to go on with their usual activities, and there is no cause for alarm.
“No arrests have been made so far. Efforts are on to replace the gunboat.”
Only last week, reports surfaced last week that a 28-year-old man duped Assistant Inspector General of police, Umar Manko to the tune of N450,000, but was later arrested.
