A highway sweeper under the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) on Wednesday lost her life when a vehicle knocked her off the Third Mainland Bridge to ground.
A Correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) who was at the scene of the accident reports that the sweeper was hit when the vehicle had a bust tyre.

NAN reports that the accident occurred at about 11 a.m. behind Kam Salem House, the Police Headquarters annex at the Obalende.

The driver of the vehicle, military personnel, was said to be speeding when his tyre burst and the vehicle somersaulted severally.

The victim, according to eyewitnesses was flung into the air and thrown over the bridge to the ground.

The unconscious military personnel was taken to the nearby Military Hospital in Ikoyi in a tricycle, popularly known as “Keke Marwa’’ by his colleagues.

The victim, who was identified as Bisi by her colleagues was said to be a dutiful worker who loved her job with passion in spite of the little salary she earned.

An official of Lagos State Transport Management Authority (LASTMA), who spoke anonymously, confirmed to NAN that the owner of the Peugeot 407 car was on speed when the tyre burst.

As at the time of this report, the mangled body of the victim was covered with cellophane wrapping and cloth while her colleague awaited their managers to arrive at the scene.

I still believe that those cleanings should be done at night when there is less traffic using sophisicated motorised sweepers as they do else where in large populated cities. .  There should be more patrol during the day to curb rubbish dumping with heavy fines for senseless dumpting while Bins should be provided for such dumps that could be regularly cleared as appropriate
This needless loss of life can be avoided if this or similar even more refined measures are taken

Hmmm! See weti them di take clean the road sef. Poor lady just lost her life just like that. May she fine peace and rest in peace. If humans are to clean the road the police are supposed  to be there to control traffic and protect those ladies. Africa! Hmmm!

Rest in peace to her, this is so sad. I think there should be a safety procedure laid down to make sure these workers are safe on highways
