The chairman of the meeting and commissioner of police in the state, Musa Kimo, in his opening remarks, explained that the parley was to meant to assure political parties and their candidates of security agencies preparedness to assist the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to conduct free and fair, violent-free election.
He said the meeting was also meant to appeal to parties and candidates to advise their members and supporters on the need to conduct themselves peacefully during the elections as security operatives would not relent to deal accordingly with anyone found wanting during the exercise irrespective of who.
“All the security agencies in the state have promised to be impartial in discharging our functions before, during and after the re-run elections,” Kimo said.
The commissioner of police speech was welcomed by all the participants, but a statement credited to the state chairman of the APC, chief Davis Ibianmu Ikanya, sparked the clash.
The state’s APC chairman alleged that the killings in Omoku, the home town of the state chairman of the PDP, Brother Felix Obuah was masterminded by members of the ruling PDP.
The statement reportedly threw the ongoing peaceful parley into commotion as members of the PDP reacted angrily and demanded a retraction of the statement before the meeting can continue.
It was reported that no fewer than 24 persons, including women and children were killed in a brawl that broke out in the area last week Saturday.
The two parties have been embroiled in war of words over the unfortunate incident. The APC alleged that the brawl was politically motivated against it members and supporters ahead of the forth coming rerun, but the PDP had insisted that it was rival cult war that led to the incident, adding that the APC is making false allegation.
The chairman of the state’s APC who pegged the total number of death on 24, called on the police to properly investigate and arrest those involved in the act before the rerun election.
Ikanya also disclosed that 95 members of the APC were killed across the state during the last general elections, plus the over 24 that were killed in Omoku. He insisted that PDP members should be held accountable for the killings.
The state’s PDP chairman in his reaction called on the police to invite his APC counterpart for questioning on the killings in Omoku, claiming that his comments hints on concluded plans to cause a breakdown of Law and Order in the state.
“The APC chairman must be questioned for all the allegations he has made, by his statement, it is obvious that the APC has concluded plans to cause breakdown of law and order in the state,” he said
