The beating to death of the alleged gay is not really surprising. All across Nigeria, people of different segxwal orientation are being hunted down and killed by mobs.
Many Nigerians still believe it is a taboo to have a different segxwal orientation. The gay community has been living in fear of mob attacks and a law that prohibits gay marriage.
In 2014, during the former administration of President Goodluck Jonathan, a bill which criminalises and stipulated fourteen years for gay marriage was passed by the National Assembly.
The anti-gay law was roundly criticised for violating the rights of gays in the country. Since the law was passed, gays have been harassed and jailed all across the country. Some have met their untimely deaths when homophobes set on them and lynched them in violation of their right to life
The international community have asked the Nigerian government to protect the rights of gays across the country and protect them from lynch mobs.
