Senator representing Delta Central Senatorial District, Ovie Omo-Agege has revealed that the Senate will soon begin consideration of a bill on segxwal harassment in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions which he will sponsor alongside 53 other co-sponsors.
He gave this revelation in an interview with us in Abuja, while noting that his concern for segxwal harassment in the nation’s institutions of learning has received tremendous support despite the fact that he is of the Labour Party.

Omo-Agege stressed that the Senators see themselves as patriotic and that he would exploit the understanding of his colleagues despite party and religious differences to push the bill to a conclusive end in order to save the country’s citadel of learning from embarrassment and as well assure qualitative education based on merit.

Quote
“We are first and foremost Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria before any other thing and we are committed to those things that will benefit the nation. I am sponsoring a bill on segxwal harassment in tertiary institutions in Nigeria and as I speak, not less than 53 Senators have indicated their co-sponsorship,”
he revealed. He said, co-sponsors cut across party and religious divides.

He added that it was a good thing that the controversial Calabar – Lagos Rail project which has a provision of N60billion in 2016 budget was later sustained with assurance that the project would be completed in the next 24 months.

The lawmaker expressed confidence that the balance of rail project funds which President Buhari sourced from his China trip shows that APC-led government was doing its best to deliver on the mandate despite daunting challenges.

Quote
“There is a provision of N60billion in this year’s budget and part of what gratify me is the balance of the project that President Buhari sourced from his trip to China. I think the administration is doing a lot,”
he maintained.

According to him, the Rail stop which covers Ughelli, Warri and Sapele, his Senatorial District will provide job opportunities as well as improve transportation in the South East and South South.

@zone61: yes that law will create jobs directly and indirectly. Directly, students and academia would realign their personal values with professional ethics while building a conducive and qualitative learning environment. Indirectly, the quid pro quo exploitative mechanism of the academic and non-academic staff, which undermines the academic achievement of the students would greatly be eliminated or reduced. A healthy learning atmosphere/environment, which this law would establish would make it possible for students to be well prepared or qualified for productive employment in today's job market. So, it is about time we have laws to guard against the excesses of the lecturers who use the ungodly phrase, "sort yourself out" to enrich themselves, defile our youth and debase our wives in the name "sex acquired grades and certificates/diplomas".
