The suspect, Okechukwu Agbanama, 27, who wept profusely as he spoke to Daily Sun recently, said he had no intention of killing the victim, Udoka Ibemesi.
He, however, narrated how he met and fell in love with a lady, described by Ibemesi as his sister-in-law. The victim expressed shock that Ibemesi, who earlier introduced the lady identified as Judith to him turned round to claim that she was his girlfriend.
“He accused me of sleeping with his girlfriend. Could he have been sleeping with his sister-in-law?”
According to the suspect, it was Ibemesi who arranged a meeting between him and Judith when he indicated his interest to date her. And Judith agreed to be his girlfriend.
“But two weeks after, when our love was becoming stronger, Ibemesi came and accused me of going out with his heartthrob.
He claimed he wanted to put her faithfulness to test, by telling me that she was her sister-in-law,” he said.
According to him, that fateful Tuesday night Ibemesi was killed, he (Agbanama) was relaxing outside with Judith, before he heard a knock on the door.
“I thought armed robbers had invaded our compound. So, I decided to open the door, before they could force it open and kill us,” he said. But when he opened the door, it was Ibemesi, who allegedly armed himself with bottle. He said: “I asked him what the problem was and he threatened to kill Judith, if she failed to leave the room. Judith obeyed and walked out of the room.”
According to him, immediately Judith left his room, the victim broke the bottle and stabbed him, “It was when I discovered that I would be killed if I did nothing to defend myself, that I started struggling with him. I later lay my hands on a knife and stabbed him on the neck in self defence,” he further claimed.
When the suspect noticed the victim was bleeding profusely, he removed his clothes and tied it round his neck, to prevent further loss of blood. “I requested for help which never came. I tried to lift him but couldn’t, because he was a huge person.”
He told Daily Sun that all his efforts to save the victim proved futile, as he later gave up the ghost.
He said: “I did not mean to kill him, he was a good friend of mine. I only stabbed him in self-defence. If I knew he was dating Judith, I wouldn’t have indicated interest in her. Afterall, there are many girls out there, looking for people like me.”
But one of Ibemesi’s relatives, who gave his name as Obinna said the victim, their brother, was not alive to defend himself. “Udoka is dead and nobody can speak for him, let him rest in peace. God knows what transpired among Judith, Ibemesi and our brother,” he said.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesman, Mr. Frank Mba confirmed the tragic incident.
