Okafor, a native of Ihialla in Anambra State, resides at 61, Shorinmade Street, Ogba, Lagos, while his wife, Mrs. Olapeju Okafor, 42, a nurse, is the mother of Chibueze Okafor, 8 years old.
P.M.NEWS investigations revealed that the hotelier met Olapeju about 12 years ago. Then, she had just lost her husband and was residing in a room apartment alongside her siblings.
Mrs. Olapeju Okafor, who P.M.NEWS met in the chamber of her lawyer, Godwin Ikpotakin Esq. at Maryland, Lagos, narrated hear ordeal:
Please before he kills me, I must cry out. My husband is a ritualist. He had used me for money and thereafter, he bought six houses and hotels in different places and exotic cars.
He had only one shop where he sold provision when he met me. In 1998, he approached me that he loved me that he wanted to marry me and I quickly turned down his offer because I knew he was a married man.
He used to come to my shop every time to disturb me that he was a divorcee and showed me a copy of divorce letter from the court.
I sat him down and told him that I was not going to marry him because I knew he would do the same thing to me after achieving his aim. It was then he narrated what happened between him and his former wife, Mrs. Blessing Okafor, mother of his four children, an Igbo by tribe. He said that she stole in the market place and when caught, she was beaten and stripped and that she used to send armed robbers to his provision shop, and most of the times that he tried to take money to the bank, robbers would come from nowhere to collect it.
One day, he came to my house and he met one man who was a visitor to my sister and confronted him that he was my boyfriend. In the presence of the visitor, I asked Leonard Okafor to repeat what he said, and when the visitor declared he was not my boyfriend, my husband apologised.
Yet, he was not satisfied and he told me to go to the market and buy a native fowl that I like and I must not price it, with kola nut, bitter kola and alligator pepper. When I asked him why, he said he wanted to confirm maybe the visitor was my boyfriend.
I put everything down and he asked me to tie the leg of the fowl, he then said I should hold it and put it on the bed. He ate the alligator pepper, chanting incantations for about 4 minutes.
Suddenly, the fowl jumped up three times and died. I was surprised and all my body was shaking. He said it is now that he believed that the visitor was not my boyfriend.
Three days after, I started feeling dehydrated and I discovered that something was moving round my body. I also noticed that when I sleep in the night, I bed-wetted until I was taken to Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State for treatment.
My husband is heartless. He doesn’t even take care of the only son I have for him, not even payment of his school fees.
P.M.NEWS met Chief Okafor in his lawyer’s chamber, Kunle Fadipe and Company at College Road, Ifako, Agege and his response was “I have been charged to court and detained in Kirikiri over this case last December. I caught my wife three times having sex with men and I performed rituals to appease my god so that I won’t die prematurely because of her waywardness.
“I did not use her for money ritual as she claimed. She wrote a petition to FCID, Alagbon on this matter where the case is being investigated.”
Chief Okafor’s counsel, Barrister Kunle Fadipe, said: “What my client told you was nothing but the truth.”
