Adamu was arraigned alongside 18 others, all of them accused of looting over N15 billion from the treasury through contracts awarded when he was Governor for eight years.
The others charged to court include Halilu Usman, Usman Aboki, Nicholas Ukachukwu, Prince and Princes Limited, Jonabel Engineering Nigeria, JCC International, Mbani Construction Company, and Shinco Nigeria.
They also include Henry & Nick Associates, Water Search Nigeria, Sneccou Group of Companies, Nicas Industry, Addais Nigeria, Faslan Ventures, Yoojin Nigeria, Kiagama Coy Limited, Sharafa Bros Nigeria, and Riok International.
Defence counsel, Pius Akubo, argued that they would need time to study the charges before taking a plea, as they were served a few minutes before the proceedings.
Akubo also pointed out that only three of the 20 accused persons were in court, while the name of one of them, Baba Gbefwi, was missing from the list attached to the charge sheet.
But prosecution counsel, Adeniyi Akintola, argued that the other suspects not physically present were companies used by human beings to commit the crimes.
He urged the court to adjourn for a few hours to enable the defence study the charges so the accused could take their plea.
Justice I.M. Buba, adjourned proceedings for one hour, and on resumption ruled that the prosecution had a duty to amend the charge sheet by including the missing name and properly serve the charges on the defence.
Among the allegations is that:
• Adamu and former Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs Commissioner, Aliyu Usman, between May 1999 and May 2007 and 2002 and 2007 respectively, authorised the withdrawal of N2.456 billion in 36 months from the State Local Government Joint Account.
The accused were granted bail in the sum of N500 million and two sureties who must have landed properties within the jurisdiction of the court.
The case was adjourned to March 15.
