After ruling his country for 22 years, President Yahya Jammeh of Gambia has suffered a shocking defeat in the Presidential election. President Yahya Jammeh, who has ruled The Gambia for 22 years, has conceded defeat to opposition leader Adama Barrow, the chairman of the electoral commission said on Friday, AFP reports.

“It’s really unique that someone who has been ruling this country for so long has accepted defeat,” Alieu Momar Njie Chairman of the Independent Electoral Commission told reporters.

This comes after the opposition candidate Adama Barrow took a massive lead after almost 75 per cent of votes had been counted in Gambian presidential voting, threatening President Yahya Jammeh’s 22-year-rule, the electoral commission said on Friday.

Barrow, who has the support of seven political parties, had won 22 out of 53 constituencies or 138,148 votes in Thursday’s presidential polls. According to the commission, incumbent Jammeh won 14 out of 53 constituencies or 126,587 votes.
