The dad of a newborn baby died after downing a bottle of tequila without stopping in a bid to win a £700 bet. Kelvin Rafael Mejia collapsed seconds after being handed the cash on stage at a nightclub in the Dominic Republic. The 23-year-old, stood on stage wearing a black T-shirt with a skull motif, was recorded on a mobile phone necking the drink.

The crowd were whooping and cheering as he woozily raises he arms in triumph and then stands with his hand out as the cash is counted into it.

The prize money was reported as 40,000 Domincan Pesos - around £682.

But seconds after collecting his prize, Kelvin who had just a month ago had become a father, collapsed unconscious.

He was taken to a nearby clinic called Coral where he died despite doctors’ efforts to save him.

Police say there are varying accounts of how the fatal gamble came about.

Local media reported that the man was the father of a month-old baby and that he was considered as a healthy, very friendly young man.
