South Africa's embattled President Jacob Zuma has resigned his office with immediate effect.

He made the announcement in a televised address to the nation on Wednesday evening.

Earlier, Mr Zuma's governing ANC party told him to resign or face a vote of no confidence in parliament on Thursday.

The 75-year-old has been under increasing pressure to give way to Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, the ANC's new leader.

Mr Zuma, who has been in power since 2009, faces numerous allegations of corruption.

His resignation came at the end of a long speech in which he said he disagreed with the way the ANC had acted towards him.

He said he did not fear a motion of no-confidence, adding: "I have served the people of South Africa to the best of my ability."

The ANC issued a statement saying Mr Zuma's resignation provided "certainty to the people of South Africa".

Mr Zuma, a former member of the ANC's military wing in the days of apartheid, rose through the ranks of the party to become president. He led the country for more than a third of its time after apartheid.

But he leaves office with several scandals hanging over him, and with South Africa's economy in dire straits.

First it was ROBERT MUGABE of Zimbabwe and NOW JACOB ZUMAof South Africa.

Both REMOVED with  NO BLOODSHED and NO LOSS OF LIFE.

NIGERIA has a lot to learn from our Southern Africa brethren.

buhari is brain dead, he has no use for most people, a nepotist, he has nothing to offer, he is only for the north, Nigeria is not a nation for the north and it will never be a nation for the north, People must take concrete actions that prevent nepotism,  we must take the counsel of the wise concerning how to updrage our lives and to create a better economy, provide oppurtunities for the masses and educate the children. We must seek the best future for everyone, now is time to take as much wise counsel as possible.

and youths should become sensible, don't rush to actions, develop your mental capacity, to detect liars, to build  yourselves every day, to have common goals or cooperations on different ideas, you have the power when you cooperate and have good ideas, you can change situations, we must create a decent culture for progress, respest for talents, love for people, and encouragement for the poor through their empowerment mentally, respect for everyone despite his or her culture or religion, because there is good in everyone, we are lucky to have yoruba, hausa and Igbo together and we are lucky to have others, no matter their numbers, lets us stop limited thinking, I myself am quilty of limited thinking, and it is by admitting our failures, and understanding our bad thinking, then we can make progress.
We can come together and stop this president, because honestly he is old and not serious, and he should be kind to step down, he performed so badly. Honestly i thought he might have good ideas but he is just wasting precious time, time is the most expensive resource.

Guys i'd thought this forum is for educating ourselves on ways to move forward as a nation, but some of us choose otherwise. People like willyking and crocatum should wait 4 Buhari to finish his tenure constitutionally, then his legacies will be a song on your lips. Remember as you're all insulting him today, others behind you will rain worse insults on you. May God Bless This Nation.

Mallam' his tenure was violated and ended when he overstayed in London according to the costutution, but he managed by an outlaw means and continued. A president that cant abide by the law he was voted in to protect should resign.Besides he added no value to the nation since he came in. Is not hatred or tribalism is a fact. He is endangering the future of Nigeria the more he stays.
