since the Senate passed a Bill on March 11, 2010 barring all former military heads of state that came to power by force or through undemocratic process from benefiting in the new remuneration package for heads of state, the former military president, Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida – aka IBB has raised his ugly head again. Once again, IBB supporters - political jobbers of Nigeria, want to force General Babangida to throw his weight into the 2011 presidential elections simply because of the political muddle and nightmare that the country is in at the moment.

And so, IBB, being such an unwise person despite his gray hairs, has decided to contest the presidential elections in 2011 under the PDP platform. Already, his cronies have begun to saturate the landscape with IBB photos and political slogans for 2011. At the meantime, IBB is going around giving political speeches at any opportunity he could find. Earlier in the month, the so-called Maradona of Nigerian politics, spoke at the 54th birthday of the Ogun State Governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, where he gave a condition for any Nigerian who wishes to contest the 2011 presidential election to see true federalism as a critical issue. Yes, most well meaning Nigerians want to see true federalism in our nation and by the way, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu talked about it almost 50 years ago.

Also, at the 55th anniversary of Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) held in Abuja last week, Mr. Babangida spoke on Nigeria’s unity, arguing that the Nigerian nation had lived together for 50 years and the citizens should not look back. This is in response to bitter and hard truth that Col. Maummar Gaddafi made about Nigeria after the Jos mayhem last month.

However, the recent interview that IBB granted to the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) over the weekend, in which he allegedly said that there is no young people capable of leading Nigeria and so feels that even in his 70’s, he still has the capacity, wisdom, and experience to lead Nigeria again was foolish and unfortunate statement.

In fact the entire interview on BBC this past weekend exposes the arrogance, ignorance and the greedy attitude of Ibrahim Badamosi Babangida. IBB is unwise, presumptuous, and a jealous human being. I believe that his ambition and quest to govern Nigeria again are driven by a jealous, retaliatory, and demonic spirit. This is a man who recently lost his wife of 38 years to cancer and should be mourning for her demise rather than aspiring to rule Nigeria again after his despicable and bastardization of Nigeria political entity and social systems during his 8-year reign dictatorship.

Where will I begin to analyze his BBC interview? First of all, despite his acclaimed charisma and political wisdom, IBB does not know that Barack Obama before been elected the 44th president and first black president of the United States of America on November 4, 2008, served as Illinois State Senate from 1997-2004; and then served as Democratic Senator from January 3, 2005, to November 16, 2008.

How does he aspire to lead Nigeria in the 21st century when he does not have the correct facts on the most important political event of our recent time? His idiotic statements and unwise decision compel me to ask this question – what must have been in his head when he took over the affairs of Nigerian in 1985 by force as a relatively young military man - then in his early 40’s. No wonder, the man caused such havoc and wrecked the Nigerian economy with his Structural Adjustment Program known as SAP. In the 1987, IBB introduced a highly publicized economic package "Structural Adjustment Programmed” that was aimed to establish a realistic exchange rate for Nigeria and restructure the economy, which was a dismal failure. It cost hundreds of millions Naira to implement and ended up being an economic strategy to enrich himself and his few friends. Millions of U.S. dollars borrowed from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and World Bank to implement the program were squandered. He used SAP economic package to loot the national treasury and plundered the nation’s foreign reserves.

SAP, which was later known as “Suffer and Perish” had such devastating effects on the economy and severe consequences on thousands of Nigerian students abroad. According to Babangida’s economic team and their Western friends then at World Bank and IMF - the writers of the economic package argued that SAP would restructure the economy and achieve a realistic exchange rate for Naira. Rather than achieve the economic benefits promised by General Babangida and his protégées, SAP created a comatose economy with wrenching problems - severe inflation, massive unemployment, declining foreign reserves, huge balance of payments and a valueless Naira, which we still have today.

He institutionalized 419, corruption at high levels and plundered the economy. His brutal and rigid regime authorized and orchestrated the killings of several of his critics and opponents including one of Nigeria’s brilliant journalists-Dele Giwa. Until today, IBB and his crony friends have not answered the charges leveled against them including the Pius Okigbo panel report which accused IBB of mismanaging US$12.4 billion oil windfall during the desert storm. In 2003, the chairman of EFCC, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, pointedly accused Babangida of being the patron of fraudsters in the country. In short, IBB should be locked in prison for life his atrocities during his 8-year dictatorship and for failure to appear before Pius Okigbo panel to answer charges that were leveled against him, yet he is going around giving talks and insulting the young people he vandalized and destroyed their lives. It is only in Nigeria that this sort of nonsense will happen. If I were president of Nigeria, he will be the first person I will arrest and lockup in prison for life.

General Babangida celebrated corruption and made illiterate people such as Orji kalu, the Ubas, and others instant millionaires. He enthroned the new super rich while millions of Nigerians suffered. In fact, the era of IBB led to the beginning of the moral decadence and purposeless society that we have today. He introduced the political culture where money is worshipped, egotism, greed, avarice, envy, hatred, jealousy, immorality, idolatry, atrocities, ignorance, darkness, political rituals, divination, astrology, sorcery, witchcraft, magic, and all manners of evil and satanic manipulation became the order of the day during his reign. The depth of corruption and social degradation led to moral decline, ethical and spiritual decadence at all levels in our society today. His economic agenda destroyed the Naira and basically rubbished the Nigerian economy, which actually elevated greed, bribery, and corruption we see today. Naira was devalued and a dollar could buy 100 Naira at that time.

The quest for dollar and foreign currency motivated many young Nigerian girls into lucrative prostitution overseas, mostly in Italy, Holland, France, and Switzerland where most of them were infected with HIV. The rampancy of AIDS cases in Nigeria today is as a result of an uncontrollable ring of organized prostitution of young Nigerian girls that were taken to overseas for such old fashion trade in the early 1980’s and forced into organized prostitution due to economic and financial hardship at home. His administration did absolutely nothing to stop such organized crime against the reproductive resources of our country. And then these young girls infect their boy friends and their Nigerian husbands in a country where basic necessities of life lack in abundance not to mention of sound medical treatment. This unbridled greed and segxwal pervasion led to social and moral decadence we see in Nigeria today. IBB economic and other public policies destroyed the potential, creativity and God given skills and talents that lie within the Nigerian people.

IBB and those clamoring for his return should be ready for the young generation, which he has publicly and internationally insulted. He and Nigeria will never have peace if he maneuvers to become Nigeria’s president in 2011. We will disrupt with our pen, civil disobedience and blood. Enough is enough. It is a disgrace that the Northern people cannot find and present capable people to run for higher offices in the land except to recycle these vicious and half educated people. This is what we have had in the last 40 years.

IBB insulted the young people of Nigeria that his administration failed to educate. During his 8-year tenure, university education was bastardized and many young people and professors fled the country in search of better education and teaching environments elsewhere. IBB talks about unity yet; he was responsible for the political disunity in our nation today with his senseless states creation.

During his 8-year reign, IBB spent $38 billion to build a new capital – Abuja. Abuja was a vast area of land without any single structure but forest. Today, it is the pride of Nigeria. Even though, I still consider it a good federal investment – moving the capital from the congested city of Lagos to a structured, organized and centric city, yet it was a huge capital investment. My question then is why the federal Government is unable to undertake such development and infrastructural development in other regions of the country. What about Niger Delta region that has become an eye sore and un-livable today? Why is this injustice and wickedness in allocation of federal capital projects, federal appointments, revenue allocation, etc even though the oil resources from South-South and Southeast account for more than 80% of the revenue income of the nation. Why does our federal government continue to hold the power in the center rather than allow the states and local government to be more autonomous? And by the way, when will the true federalism become a reality in Nigeria?

In conclusion, if IBB aspires to contest the 2001 presidential elections, which the constitution allows him to, he must be ready to answer the following questions:

   1. Why did he kill Dele Giwa, Mamman Vatsa, M. K. O. Abiola and others?

   2. What did he do with $12.4 billion oil windfall?

   3. Why did he cancel the 1992 presidential election - fairest and freest election in which his friend Moshood Abiola clearly won?

   4. Why did he institutionalize corruption and created the illiterate millionaires in likes of Orji Kalu, the Ubas that we have today in our land?

   5. Why did he cause such enmity between the people of south-south and southeast?

   6. Why does he have such a disdain for Nigeria and the Nigerian people?

   7. Why is he insulting the young people of Nigeria?

   8. When will he stand and answer in the courts the Pius Okigbo panel report?

   9. Will IBB pass the PDP Code of Conduct or Dr. Gowon’s criteria for leadership?

  10. What is his true identity? Is IBB a true Nigerian?

Has IBB and his cronies thought about these young and intellectual Nigerian leaders of international repute – Mrs. (Dr). Ngozi-Okonjo Iweala, Mrs. Oby Ezekwesili, Prof. Dora Akunyuli, Prof. Charles Soludo, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, Prof. Pat Utomi, Governors Donald Duke, Otunba Gbenga Daniel, Babatunde Fashola , and many others who are 1000 times more qualified than IBB to lead Nigeria in this highly technological and information age.
