The Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki has refuted claims that he referred to the senator representing Kogi West senatorial district, Sen. Dino Melaye, as a “clown”.

The senator representing Nasarawa West senatorial district, Sen. Abdullahi Adamu, made the claims in a recent interview with a national newspaper, adding that Saraki said so in a private conversation with him.

Saraki said Adamu’s statement constituted falsehood against his person as he never made any such comments.

The senate president, in a Monday statement through his media aide Yusuph Olaniyonu, also said that Adamu had carried out sustained media attacks against his person and office while he refused to reply him on account of his age.

Saraki stressed that he had reason to believe that Adamu was deliberately attacking him to please the presidency.

However, he warned Adamu against further attacks against his person and office.

The statement read in part, “I have deliberately ignored the antics of Senator Abdullahi Adamu, especially his constant media attack on me and the Senate.

“So far, I had refrained from responding in kind out of respect for his age. However, it seems he has misread my maturity and respect for docility.

“He feels the best way to play his self-survival game and ingratiate himself to the government in order to save his skin is for him to be seen to be fighting Saraki.

“However, I feel his latest statement in an interview with a national newspaper deserves a reaction from me.”

Saraki wondered why he would refer to Melaye as a “clown” knowing that he (Melaye) had performed better than Adamu in the senate.

He said, “Senator Melaye has so far outshined and has performed better than Senator Abdullahi in terms of the number of bills sponsored, motions raised and contributions to debate on the Senate floor.”

The senate president called on Nigerians to ignore the comments by Adamu.

How can a man as old as Abdullahi Adamu overly engage in amebo of this magnitude? Granted that Saraki had said this to him, what is the reason behind his recent outburst? I feel a man of Adamu's age should act like a father to the younger one. He should desist from fanning the embers of hatred between Saraki and Buhari.
