Some concerned Nigerians have stormed the Police Headquarters in Abuja to demand the released of Premium Times journalist, Samuel Ogundipe. They protested against the continued detention and secret trial of Samuel Ogundipe.

The Nigerians who launched a Twitter campaign under the hashtag, #FreeSamuelOgundipeNOW to demand the journalist’s freedom condemned his continued detention and condition of freedom given to him by the Nigerian police.

Recall that the Police, yesterday, secretly commenced the trial of Ogundipe at a Magistrate’s Court in Kubwa, while denying him access to his lawyers. He was charged with criminal trespass and theft of police document.
The Police accused him of violating Sections 352, 288 and 319 of the Penal Code. However, a review of the sections, however, indicated that they are not related to the charges but are about segxwal assault and attempted murder.

The Police has since frozen his bank account just some moment after his arrest and detention. Many notable Nigerians have since taken to the social media platform, twitter to call for his release and the #FreeSamuelOgundipe hashtag is already trending on the platform.

The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) also condemned the arrest and detention of Samuel Ogundipe.

Stating that the constant attempt to intimidate journalist, is inimical to democracy.
