Detectives attached to Homicides Section, Panti, Yabi, Lagos State Command have launched investigation into the death of a 36-year-old man, Victor Dayo Jegede, who allegedly committed suicide at Ketu, Alapere. Jegede, it was learnt, was declared missing by his father for about three days, but was later found in a well in his parents’ house on Sunday last week by a tenant who went to fetch water.

The deceased was said to be suffering from depression immediately he graduated from the university, which prevented him from relating well with some of his friends on the street. The incident occurred at No 6, Akintan Street, Ketu, Alapere area about 11.30p.m., Sunday last week. A resident of the area, who gave her name simply as Ogechi, said it was unfortunate that Jegede ended his life in that manner. She said: “Uncle D as, we fondly called him, had been suffering from depression for about six years. We don’t know what actually led to his depressed state, but once in a while he would play with his friends and those of us who are his younger ones on the street. But whenever he was depressed he would be indoors.

“I was in the school when I received the sad news of his death. I knew that he was not feeling fine but there was a time his parents took him to hospital where he was treated and became normal, but suddenly his condition changed again.

“I heard that his body was later brought out of the well by the fire service and deposited at the mortuary.

But I don’t see him like someone who can commit suicide, because he was a friendly person to everyone in the community but God knows why he killed himself.”
Another resident, Mrs. Dupe Olamide, said she did not see Jegede as someone who could commit suicide because he was friendly to everybody on the street except whenever he was depressed.

She said: “I was preparing to go out that fateful day, when I heard people screaming, calling his name, it was when I moved closer to their house that I discovered that Uncle D jumped into the well and his parents had reported him to Alapare Police Station, where he was declared missing, but his death was a surprise to me.

“It was a bitter experience for a parent who had nurtured such a person from infant to that stage and he then committed suicide. I pray God will console his parents because it was a big loss to them and even those of us who knew him very well.”

When our correspondent visited the house, a lady who did want her name in print, said his mother relocated to her daughter’s house at Ikorodu after the incident. Also, the well where the deceased jumped into was padlocked. Confirming the incident, the state Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), CSP Chike Oti, said it was reported at Alapere Police Station on August 19.

He said: “About 11.30p.m. that Jegede Adebayo of No. 6 Akintan Street, Alapere, Ketu came to the police station and reported that his son, Victor Jegede, whom he has not een for some days was found dead inside his well in his compound.

“Same day the divisional police officer and his team visited the scene, corpse removed and body deposited at the mortuary. “The case has been transferred to Homicide Section at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department (SCIID), Panti, Yaba, for further investigation on the matter.”

the patterns of depression must be recognized and the harmful thoughts must be recognized, and what causes this pattern of thinking must be understood, its okay to talk to someone who you know is kind and helpful and can understand and its okay to understand and speak what is wrong.

Self Affirmations and positive reinforcement may not be sufficient, you need a deeper understanding of mental illness and depression because the way we think leads to depression and if we understand how we think, we can more effectively deal with such problems.
