A bizarre new challenge sweeping Instagram in China has seen people sharing photos of themselves falling out of cars with luxury goods.

The 'flaunt your wealth challenge' has sparked more than a million posts on Weibo, the country's equivalent of Facebook, with social media users splayed amid shoes, expensive bags and even bundles of cash.

The trend began in Russia as the #fallingstars challenge, with people competing to perform the most dramatic falls, but in China so-called 'influencers' have leapt on it as a chance to show off their shopping hauls.

One image, which has been seen upwards of 50,000 times, shows a woman next to her car in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, next to make up, high heels and a handbag. She was later found by police and fined.

Despite the attention lavished on some of the most popular posts, many have attracted abuse. The trend may also worry the Communist Party, which has identified income inequality as one of the key threats facing China.
