The Kano State Government says it will conduct a  group wedding for 1,500 prospective couples in  the 44 local government areas of the state on Sunday, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The Chief Press Secretary to Governor, Mr Abba Anwar, said this in a statement on Saturday.

He said the couples passed through different stages of screening before they were selected.

He said N20,000 would be given by the state government as bride price  for every bride, amounting to N30m  for the 1,500 couples.

The statement said, “While bride price would be paid, it is also part of the magnanimous engagement by the state government that beds, side mirrors, wardrobes and mattresses would all be given to each couple.

“A complete set of cushion chairs would also be given to each couple. Curtains and plastic carpets will also be provided.

“New fabric, popularly called Shadda, would be provided for all the would-be husbands to don as happily wedded grooms, showcasing their happiness to families, friends and well wishers.’’

The state government in 2018 set up a 23-man committee on state-sponsored mass wedding under the leadership of Prof Sani Zaharaddeen.

I'm so sorry for my choice of words moderator; but how can our leaders be clueless about leading us? For heavens sake after spending such outrageous amount for a wasted venture, how is the couple going to fend for themselves? Or is the state going to provide upkeep for the family? Plus children educational fees?
Instead that money and human resource should have been used to set up factories and road infrastructure than spending it on a mass wedding.

More children will be born into already grinding poverty. Why not mass education, instead of mass wedding?
