An uncle was killed and his brother was injured after a mob in India attacked them over false rumours they had kidnapped their nephew.

The two brothers were taking the boy to a doctor in Sambhal, Uttar Pradesh, when the armed group confronted them and accused the pair of snatching the youngster.

Both men were seen laying on the ground after being dragged to a field as the gang beat them with iron bars and sticks on Tuesday, according to local media.

A video of the horrific attack was posted online showing one man being beaten to death and his sibling being injured, according to NDTV.
Police arrived at the scene and stopped the group attacking the brothers, but one man was pronounced dead when he arrived at hospital.

Senior police officer Yamuna Prasad said four suspects have been arrested so far in the investigation.

He told local media: 'They [the victims] were taking their ill nephew to hospital in Chandausi when the incident happened. Four people so far have been arrested.'
Rumours have spread throughout the state of child snatchers being on the loose with around 100 similar mob attacks reported this month.

Often false rumours of kidnapping in India are spread over WhatsApp and some attacks have seen innocent victims killed.

A woman who was taking her grandson shopping in Ghaziabad near Delhi was beaten by a mob this week over allegations that she also was a child kidnapper.
So far 44 people have been arrested for various mob attacks in the Uttar Pradesh state.

Uttar Pradesh Police said they are taking action in a bid to stop attacks fuelled by incorrect rumours.

PV Ramasastry, senior police officer, told ANI news agency: 'In the last few days, people have been beaten up on accusations of child lifting by mobs in some districts.

'We analysed the incidents, there is no issue of child lifting. These are rumours spread by antisocial elements. So far 44 people have been arrested.'

Last July a software engineer was beaten to death and three other victims were seriously injured over WhatsApp rumours they had kidnapped a child.
