The Muslim Rights Concern, MURIC, has reacted to the re-arrest of Omoyele Sowore, convener of the RevolutionNow Movement by operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, at an Abuja Federal High Court.

The group says it was “improper” for a man who lost an election to lead a revolution against the winner of that same election just a few months later.

Sowore had contested for the 2019 presidential election on the platform of the African Action Alliance, AAC, but President Muhammadu Buhari had emerged the winner of the poll.

However, MURIC appealed for calm over the matter, stressing that dialogue should be used in resolving the impasse.

A statement by MURIC’s Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola reads:

Quote
“Sowore is an active member of civil society. Perhaps this is why human rights groups are in a hurry to castigate the DSS and call President Buhari names. But has civil society pursed to ponder on Sowore’s tactical blunder? We all must admit that it was improper for a man who lost an election to lead #Revolutionnow against the winner of that same election just a few months later. It amounts to seeking to gain by the bends what he could not get at the straight.

“In our efforts to engage in dialogue over the Sowore furore, we were confronted with a statement purportedly made by the activist politician. He was alleged to have said on 25th July 2019, ‘I’m not talking of protest. I’m embarking on revolution. 85% of Nigerians are in support. Don’t tell me about legal implications or what a Judge will say. I don’t care. We must bundle Buhari out of that place…the DSS shall cease to exist!’

“If it is true that he said the above, those of us in civil society should have the courage to tell him that he went too far. We all know what has been happening across the globe. Algeria, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Spain, Venezuela, etc are examples. No nation takes a threat to security lightly.

“As a human rights group, MURIC wants Sowore freed. We are for constitutionalism and rule of law. But national security must not be jettisoned. Those of us who are leaders of civil society must realise that we have a duty to lead responsibly. Radicalism must not shut the door against rationalism. We believe that Aluta must stop where any matter affecting national security starts.
MURIC has, therefore, advised members of the civil society to call off its planned protest particularly in view of the fact that government has ordered a probe into the circumstances surrounding the re-arrest of Sowore and Bakare.

Look, no matter what the utterance or utterances or ,for that matter, any action by anyone including Sowere  must be  considered lawful, unless  the judiciary courts decides otherwise, and such decision/s must be grounded in the available laws enacted by legislature . Simply put it, in a law abiding society, only the courts can deicide commission of a crime and punish as such not the President.
The executive branch of any government only, and through its police officer and Law officers department, proffer a charge/s against you on the determination of breach of the law. From there, it’s the duty of the courts to determine the breach, not the executive branch.
Regardless of what differences you might have had with Sowere, his action could, at the end of the day be determined to be in full breach of the law, but his bail Rights first have to be observed by the Executive breach without recourse.
But again, that’s Africa, where Mr President, though not a member of the judiciary, can perform all the three functions without a whiff.
The success of every nation starts with the Rule of law. You've to deal with that, or you take a walk. Let party politics don't interfere with the process.  Buhari is wrong here, and most of you fellow Nigerians are colluding with him to bastardise our constitution. It should be and must never be about an individual but the nation and posterity.

There should be no trial on social media. Femi Falano knows what the charges are. Now that the AG has taking charge of the case, let's wait for the charges. This is not student union type matter.
