The Nollywood industry has experienced major growth in recent years with the quality of the pictures, script and acting. Some of the biggest Nollywood stars have also transcended the Nigerian space and have caught the attention of international producers.

Here are the Nollywood actors who have appeared in international movies:

1.

Olu Jacobs: The legendary Olu Jacobs paved the way for other actors and actresses who have the opportunity to be featured in Hollywood movies now. His first international feature was in the 1980’s action drama, ‘Dog of War’. He played the role of a corrupt customs officer in the movie directed by John Irvin. In 1985, he played the role of Colonel Nsogbu in a fantasy film set in Africa, ‘Baby: Secret of the Lost Legend’. He appeared in Roman Polanski’s ‘Pirates’ in 1986. In the movie, he played the role of ‘Boomako, a pirate who was supposed to save his kidnapped captain.

2.

Jim Iyke: In 2013, Jim Iyke was casted as ‘Zuma’ in the American romance movie, ‘And Then There Was You.’ The movie was directed and written by Leila Djansi, a Ghanian-American filmmaker. Other cast members included Brian White, Lynn Whitfield, and Garcelle Beauvais. The movie is about a woman who was trying to pick up the pieces of her life after her husband leaves her for his secret family.

3.

Osas Ighodaro: Before Osas moved to Nigeria in 2012, she appeared in 5 American movies and three American TV series, including Tyler Perry’s ‘Meet The Browns’. Osas was part of the cast of the 2015 American movie, ‘Where Children Play’, directed by Leila Djansi. She played the role of ‘Miranda Bailey’, a supportive friend to the main character, ‘Macy Gray’ who was played by ‘Teyonah Parris’.

4.

Stephanie Linus: In 2016, Stephanie played the role of ‘Doris’, a compassionate former slave in Boonville redemption. The movie which was produced by American director and producer, Dan Schroeder was set in the old Western country.

5.

Genevieve Nnaji: She acted in the 2019 British drama film, ‘farming’, playing the role of Tolu. Her character is the mom of the main character, ‘Enitan’, who she had to give up to be fostered by a white woman. The film was produced by British-Nigerian Producer, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and also featured award-winning British actress, Kate Beckinsale.

6.

Adesuwa Etomi Wellington: Adesuwa plays the lead role in this movie, ‘Muna’ that was released on December 6, 2019. The action drama centred around human trafficking starts from Nigeria but the story leads to the US where the story ends. ‘Muna’ is a strong woman who after getting trafficked from Nigeria is on a mission to stop human trafficking.

As the quality of stories, acting and production improve in Nollywood every day to match its output, more Nollywood actors are going to get recognised internationally. Hopefully, with this recognition, there will be more Nollywood appearances in award-winning Hollywood movies.
