An IT consultant from east London is launching an audacious bid to become the president of Nigeria.

Barney Akwenuke, who came to London in 1996 and lives in Romford, plans to stand as an independent candidate in elections in January next year.

He said he decided to run for the presidency after becoming disgusted by the corruption he says is blighting the oil rich nation of more than 150 million people.

Mr Akwenuke, who was born in the village of Ozozoro, said: “I definitely consider Nigeria my home. Over there, politics is do-or-die. It's all about corruption and how much people can stuff into their pockets.

"The politicians don't care about the country. They are only interested in how much they can take or how many houses they can buy in central London with the money they get.”

Mr Akwenuke said that before going to Nigeria next month to launch his campaign he will visit Nigerians in London to raise donations.

“I'm trying to convince them that we need to do something about the state of our country,” he said. “If we can get Nigerians to say enough is enough', then I believe we can win.”

Mr Akwenuke, a member of the Romford Conservatives, said he became interested in politics after campaigning for local MP Andrew Rosindell who said: “He has been involved in the local Conservative Party for about a year and has been very enthusiastic and determined.”

Mr Akwenuke intends to apply for police protection and hire a private bodyguard in Nigeria. His wife, who was born in the UK, and their two children aged seven and 13 will stay in London

I strongly believe so. The ppl in naija are too used to the system, they do same thing always. For a change to take place we should have ppl with different mentality.

it's only in Nigeria people comes out of the blues without any history to win elections.   i wonder why they couldn't include into the electoral laws that before anyone can stand 4 election, be it as a Governor, President or as a member of either of the house, such persons must show records of his/her contributions to his locality.  as in, to show what they ve done for their own people that can be use as a yardstick for seeking to be voted into such an elevated posts in the country.

It's only when we have such laws in place that we 'll begin to witness some high levels of quality development in the country.  cos it would make anyone with the ambition of standing 4 election to first help in developing the area he/she's coming from.

I applaud Mr. Akwenuke for speaking up and planning a run for the office of president of Nigeria. I hope he follows through and I hope he is able to apply for some form of protection to guard against any form of intimidation by those corrupt Nigerian politicians who would prefer the status quo and deathly afraid of a well needed change in Nigerian politics. I am especially glad that he has thought this through and realizes the need for a private security guard for his own protection.
I hope Nigerians of all political leanings would welcome a fair, open and a truly democratic process to actually take form in Africa's most populous country. Nigerians of all political leanings are praying for the day when Nigeria would take its  place as an actual democracy and not the the ridicule of the entire world as it is now.
Give Mr. Akwenuke a fair chance and let him detail his plan and the kind of change he is willing to bring to our motherland.
It is my believe that we need a leader who will get rid of bribery and corruption, restructure our economy in a way that those able-bodied Nigerians that are looking for work will find one, farming needs to be a TOP GOVERNMENT PRIORITY---a country that cannot plant its own crops and efficiently an affordably feed its own  people is a joke, and last but not least government has to work more efficiently , get your hands off of people's money and be more accountable to the people------MEANING=== MAKE PUBLIC TO THE PEOPLE WHAT THE YEARLY BUDGET IS AND HOW IT IS BEING SPENT. All of these are all issues, however daunting, that I believe are on the minds of Nigerians and should be addressed by all who seek the office of president in the next election cycle in January 2011.
Goodluck Mr. Akwenuke or whoever is brave enough to tackle this pressing issues. How about the current Governor of Lagos State. I hear he is a bright and shining star and he has done wonders in Lagos State. How about it, Governor?

His one year support of a party in uk is not just enough to make him politically motivated to contest for the president of this country.
